Okay so the death toll is all over the place because not all news outlets are distinguishing between the airport and the train station. Per BBC- 13 at the airport and 15 at the train station.
When we traveled out of Nairobi last fall we had to have our bags scanned before we could even enter the departure area. I bet that's the direction we are headed now. Then we had to get scanned again to get to the gate and then BA did another round of scanning at the actual gate.

They were just discussing this on the news- where to put the security perimeter.

So I remember Brussels was shut down/on high alert after the Paris attacks. What came of that? Obviously nothing, but were they back to... Not being on high alert, even with the paris bomber capture? I believe the airport and trains were probable targets last time.
(I don't want to victim blame, because obviously terrorist pieces of shit are responsible, but I'm wondering about security precautions in the EU capital/home of NATO. When I was in Brussels I only went through the main train station, not the airport, but I don't remember any security of any kind there, and I was traveling to and from Paris.)

I can't remember where, but I know I have been at a few airports where you had to get your luggage scanned before entering the airport. I think that is what is going to start happening everywhere. I actually thought about it when I was going through O'Hare a few days ago. We are all packed in the security line and everyone with a large carry on bag. I was thinking it would be a great place for an attack.

They are suggesting on the news here that this is the network that was coordinated by the Paris terror suspect and they had to move quickly before he gave up any information.

It's just horrifying to think about.
This is so similar to Homeland this season it's unbelievable.
The ceiling in the airport started to collapse. There was a baggage handler, covered in blood, that was pulling people out. He said two were dead. He pulled out about 10?

Also I kind of hate social media during times like this. It provides instant access to the most horrific photos which are then shown over and over again. I find it disrespectful to the people who died or were injured.
I'm so pissed. My friend was at the airport 40 feet from the explosions. He and his friend are completely fine. But he jumped on top of her when the explosions happened. Thank goodness for Facebook.

I fucking hate these people
Oh no. Thank goodness they are ok. They must be in complete shock.

I give up.
One of my friends said she was going to channel Mr. Rogers today, and I think I might have to do it as well. Focus on the helpers today and not the evil. That man is a hero.

This is from an article published at 6am Australian time today March 22. It just shows how much intent went into these attacks.
Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said that Abdeslam had already told investigators he was planning some sort of new attack in Brussels.
“That may be the reality because we have found a lot of weapons, heavy weapons, in the first investigations and we have found a new network around him in Brussels,” Reynders told a panel discussion in Brussels.
