So, we know that within the next few years we want to redo the kitchen at our house. The time frame is dependant on the cost entirely, which depending on if we are or are not allowed to put up a fence may be sooner than later.
So today we went to a local discount warehouse that has good quality stuff at a fraction of the big box stores (granite for $25/sqft for example) and found a complete kitchen in the right color and style. We'd need to order a few (1 base, one pantry, and like 3 uppers) to finish our design.
IF we can get a kickass deal (I'm going to try for at least 66% off if not closer to 75%) on these cabinets we could store them in our storage unit until we're ready for them. We have the cash on hand to pay for them outright. What do you think? What am I missing?

Nope. When we first got estimates for our kitchen I had one idea in mind. When we had enough money to actually complete the remodel we'd changed the look we were going for and found better semi custom cabinets at a great price. We were able to get one whole side extra deep which made our fridge look built in and much nicer.

The scope of the project is huge. Taking out one wall, adding another, replacing 75% of the first floor flooring, moving plumbing for both gas and water, changing window configurations, probably replacing the siding on the back of the house since the original profile is no longer made. So cabinets, counters and appliances are only a small part of the project. Plus, we'll be doing a lot of the work, which will help but make it take longer.
As for the style, it's a basic shaker style in plain white. It will be timeless. It's the same cabinet style I put in our other two houses (once in 2004 and again in 2011) so the idea of me NOT liking that style is pretty unfathomable. That would be like saying I won't like jeans in 5 years.
I don't think the project will TAKE 5 years, but that was the original timeline.

I would not do it. 5 years is a long time to store something that may or may not work in the future. As you said, cabinets are only a small part of the project, and they may no longer make the extra ones you have to order or the configuration may not work as you think it will when you have exact measurements.
Nope... we had to blow out a wall and measurements ended up being slightly different than what we originally expected. If we had ordered beforehand the cabinet would not habe worked
No way. It's been 5 years since my last remodel and my taste has changed drastically. Also, as said above, your measurements might change. Then you might be stuck with cabinets you can't use.
I wouldn't do it. We did a 3 story addition that included a total gut of the kitchen. There were *so many* unexpected issues, dealing with walls, plumbing, electrical, you name it. Odds are high that any measurements you use to buy cabinets now will be off by the time you get to actual installation. Never mind the fact that your tastes/ideas can change a lot between now and then. Even the best deal now can turn out to be no deal at all if you end up not wanting or being able to use what you bought.

I wouldn't do it. I had to run back and forth to IKEA a million times during my kitchen renovation...the cabinet above the fridge was smaller than we realized so I had to get different doors, we used drawer fronts to cover an exposed cabinet edge, etc. With this you wouldn't be able to make any changes, or return if things ended up being damaged or wrong, etc. I found out the wood floor we used for our living room was going out of stock so I bought extra for when we redid the kitchen and stored it in our garage. Apparently even our pretty-warm-in-winter garage was too much for it...it became brittle and all the click-lock tabs broke off so the installers had to nail it in a bunch of places, and now there are big gaps where things have shifted over time. Maybe the problem was installation but I feel like even so I would have had the option to return it and insist on new stuff if I hadn't bought and stored it for a few years.

Well as it turns out, the business wants $14k for all of it, which is not a great deal since I can get exactly what I want/need for $11k by using the company I normally use.
It could be a great deal if they would sell them for $8k (it's $24k in cabinets).
