What's the best time to year to visit Barcelona? I know that the beaches are great, so the warmer months would be better. I am just wondering if there is a point that it gets too hot or humid; and if there is a time when the city shuts down for vacation like Italy in August.

We're going in a few weeks and the weather reports say it should be in the low-mid 70s which will be perfect for us. We live near the beach now so we aren't too worried about getting beach time in while there.
I was there in May last year and it was gorgeous - mid/high 70s which is hot for me (I live in Scotland). I would think May or September would be great as the kids will be in school and it will be warm but not terribly hot. I have very little tolerance for really high temperatures so usually prefer shoulder season.
I was there in late September a couple years ago. The weather was gorgeous, and there is a festival during that time called San Merce.. They had parades and musical performances.

I was there in mid-May five years ago and the temperature was perfect. Also it wasn't super crowded so easy to get around and the sights were busy but not crazy.
I've been there February/March. It was chilly but still walk-able and enjoyable. I've also been in August. It was hot during the day but not unbearable. I do remember in August the water in the Mediterranean was not warm. It was still chilly. I'm also from the humid South East so anything that is not so humid feels cool to me.
September is amazing and October actually isn't so bad either if you get a good window (early Oct). I also agree that May and early June, before kids get out of school, would be a perfect time (though you have to be careful of the Bank Holidays or half-term in May).

Good to hear, we will be there next year in September because H wants to go to a game.

I went in May and I found it a bit cold. I'd do later may or early June or September or October! I was happy I got to go to a game as I'm a huge fan so maybe try to go to one!
I was there in August once many, many years ago, and yes, almost everything was closed. Plus it was incredibly hot. It left me with a pretty sour impression of the city.
(I eventually made a return trip in late November, which was much more enjoyable, but definitely not beach weather.)
