ETA: ahh, I went to the website and read the article. So yeah, last week portions of the course washed away in the floods. I get that it sucks that it's shorter now, but guess I can't really fault them for it. There are a lot of places still with high water so trying to re-do the entire bike course when there's still so much recovering would prove to be an incredible challenge.
I thought it was more because of road construction and the fact that the northern counties refused to let the course go through them because residents complained
Ahh, I just did more googling and saw the construction part of it. According to the FB page it was finalized a couple of weeks ago and then the floods washed away part of the new course? It sounds very cluster-fuck-ish. Yikes, hopefully they get it figured out asap!
It's a cluster I remember there being major complaints by residents the year we raced it. Part of the course that was on those small back highways had traffic backed up forever. Just a mess.

The original change was made because of road construction. If they changed it again, I am sure it is because of flooding. The people in the woodlands don't like the race being there. I haven't heard any complaints from other areas though.
A lot of the athletes sound like total chucklefucks lol.
Disappointment fueled by Facebook dipshit-anonymity & weird ironman ego.
I would be really, really disappointed. Probably not enough to bitch like that on Facebook, but if that was going to be my one and only ironman, I would be super bummed it wasn't the actual official iron distance. Which might make me a total chucklefuck, but whatever.
I feel bad for the athletes, even if they're being chucklefucks (my new favorite word btw). They trained hard, some of them for their first, and it's so short they will never, in their heart, be able to claim it as a full.
I almost feel like they should make it an official HIM instead. Might piss people off but at least it's official.

I'd be horribly dissapointed, too, and don't mean to minimize that feeling. I do think there's a subset of people, though, who have the "loudest" voices that do seem irrational. Which, is sort of typical for all issues that play out on Facebook. I don't think you could be farther from a chucklefuck , nor do I think disappointment is unwarranted.
I don't think anyone would minimize the extreme disappointment someone would feel. I can't fully imagine it, yet I am certain it wound be very real & very intense. Still, there are those people, and then there are the chucklefucks that are taking it way beyond that.

So I kind of feel like I can give an opinion on this because my ironman was technically only a 138.2 because we didn't get to swim due to high rip tides. I still consider myself an ironman. The training makes you an ironman, finishing the race gives you the title. That day was the single hardest day of my entire life and no one can take that away from me, not even the people that don't think I am an ironman. It sucks that they can't get in the whole 112 miles on the bike, but I don't think it makes them any less of an ironman, it is something they had absolutely no control over.
katandkevin, I thought of you when this was posted. It's good to hear your perspective. I'm so happy you feel that way, because I think you're amazing.
There have been other instances in which races have been modified for Natural causes. IM Cozumel a few years ago had to shorten the swim. Ironman Muskoka is a tad longer. I understand the frustration but frankly it is such a day filled with so many amazing accomplishments and challenges that go beyond the distance itself. Ironman is about so much more than what happens because the bike is 18 miles short. No disrespect but whomever said it is so short that it would be like a half is disrespectful to everyone. The sticker comment is also wrong in my opinion. Texas is an incredible venue, yes, it is a shame what is happening but the ambience there is unlike any other place, the support on the run course is worth going through all you are going through. There is so much support, so many incredible people. The course is filled with supporters, fun aid stations, fun support overall, you will not regret it. Ironman is supposed to be hard, if you are complaining because of the turns, well, you are in the wrong sport. Some courses are hot, some are with really cold waters, some are mega hilly, this one will have to have turns.
The organizers did their best with what they had to work with. The people in THE Woodlands LOVE to have this race there. There have been complains but are minimal, minimal. The Woodlands is an extremely supportive community. It is a shame what is happening with the bike in terms of the floods and the change of the course but how about stepping up to whatever the challenge is, turns, heat, crazy humidity. Do you know how many athletes were aiming at this race and because of personal reasons they could not make it? accidents? Illness? money?......... If you are racing you are blessed and privileged. The organizers go through hell and back to try to fix this with all the bureaucracy that they have to go through in the towns where the course goes through..... Maybe thinking about other stuff and making the best out of the opportunity to race in Texas would be a nice attitude to have.
I don't think anyone will be telling you if you did 140.6 or 122 miles after you place your sticker on your car. After the race you will realize it is the training that makes you an ironman. If you do this to prove to others..... well.... I will leave that up to you......

I find it very suspicious that you only have 1 post and somehow found this thread

This is weird. A) several of us have actually done IMTX and are familiar with the woodlands B) obviously the training is a much bigger part of what makes you an ironman than what you do on race day.
I just think that there was some weirdness about not having a course in place even before the flooding...

Definitely someone with absolutely no ties to IM or IMTX.

The course got washed away by a disaster in which people lost their homes and lives. While yeah I get it..there were course troubles before that, the reality is the storms greatly affected the race and the course. Whining about how this is your "omg ONE opportunity!" And "you spent sooooo much money!" Or any other such complaint certainly does Make you a chucklefuck who is lacks any tyoe of empathy or resilience.
foundmylazybum I think it's completely possible to be annoyed with WTC, empathetic and sad about the loss of lives and homes, and really disappointed all at the same time
