We trade with different cast members (employees) throughout the parks. There are certain spots at both parks where trading boards are set up. Also some cast members wear lanyards and they trade from those. We've also made some trades with other pin nerds at the parks.
So, you buy and then trade with employees of Disney? Why can't you just buy from Disney?
We do that too. They sell pins on the rack. They also sell mystery pack pins. You buy them and have no idea which pins of a certain series are in the pack. If you get duplicates, you can trade those with cast members or other pin traders.

Like, blind bags. My DD is obsessed with blind bags and watching people open them on You Tube.
How does trading work? You trade them online or you're at WDW, and trade them with people in line?
The WDW subculture is so mysterious. Lol

Now I'm picturing you in a (Disney-themed) trenchcoat, leaning against...Cinderella's castle and as a cast member goes by whispering "Pssst...a little bird told me you have a hookup for a certain giggling Goofy pin..."
