Yes. I cannot encourage you enough to pay the extra for the automatic if you do end up renting a car. Worth it.
UNLESS you're like me and have a husband who likes to show off the fact that he can drive a stick. We got a manual, and therefore I got to sit in the passengers seat and stare out the window and yell at sheep the whole time instead of paying attention.
On that note, make sure when you book the rental you request a GPS. And also pay attention to make sure the GPS isn't taking you a route that requires a ferry.
Oh, I will not be driving. I will be in the passenger seat, trying not to freak the fuck out about being on the wrong side of the car and on the wrong side of the road and trying to squelch any sudden movements or sounds when I think we're about to plummet to our deaths.
Ugh. I don't know that this is going to work out. For some reason June is THE MONTH because H is convinced he will either have a job, or be freaking out about NOT having a job if we take it much later. I will barely have enough vacation time for the trip, which will leave me short of hours for a trip to Chicago we've already planned in July. We've always had trouble taking long trips because of H's job, so he's right that this IS a good time to go, but ALSO we're going to Cancun for a week next week, so this would mean 2 weeks out of the next 2 months out of the market, and that's concerning to me in a commissions-based job.
I guess I just don't feel GOOD about going in June. But I've also looked up flights in July and August and they're about $400 more each, so ugh.
I was up for an hour in the middle of the night, mad about this whole thing. LOL.
June is the best time, especially since the kids will still be in school here. As far as weather, June could go either way, but then again, the weather is never, ever sure thing here.

Oh no! Don't stress yourself out That does sound like a really busy few months. Any chance of pushing it back further? I think everything was cheaper in October for us because the weather could have started to turn a little.. but it was BEAUTIFUL the whole time we were there.

You know, we're actually thinking of September now (after Labor Day). I know the weather might be iffy, but I think I've convinced H we're better off planning this now so he can let any future employer know he needs this time off. The flight prices are pretty good that month, too.
We booked Ireland for September! Woo hoo! Tickets were slightly more than the June dates but still a good price. I feel SOOOOOOOOO much better about waiting until the fall. I can't wait!

And bring a bottle of windex and a roll of paper towels. Their wipers and windshield fluid stuff cant be depended on.
Just buy Rick Steves' book for Ireland in 2016, plus maybe Mona Winks, and you'll be all set. But Read the books while your planning your trip - he will tell you where to go, where to stay, what to eat, what trains, or other modes of transportation to take, how to read the signs, etc. It is the only book you will need. I've been to Dublin/Ireland 4 times and Rick Steves is funny and awesome.
I leave on Sunday but it's through school so we are using hostels and a tour bus thing... So I suppose I'm not that helpful. We are going to Dublin, Belfast, Ennis, and the Aran islands.
No, I haven't? It's been years. But a go as you please tour is the way to go. You will have a blast. Go to Durty Nelly's in Bunratty (and stay there in a b&b). It's not far from the Shannon Airport.
My husband and father in law spent 8 days/7 nights traveling the southwest coast of Ireland - they stayed in 3 cities, I think? Maybe 4. They went in February but it was the start of Ireland's spring. I booked the trip through great value vacations and paid less than 2k for both of them for flights from JFK, hotels that they said were amazing, and rental car that we upgraded to automatic and gps. Also included travel insurance and extra insurance for the car. He spent less than 1k there for spending money, souvenirs and food (one hotel included breakfast). They had an incredibly amazing time and we will use great value vacations in the future for sure. Good luck - hope you can swing it!
eta - I see I'm late but congrats! Have an awesome time!
