Mix 1 part ground coffee and 4 parts water. Let sit at room temperature for 12 hours. Pour through a coffee filter and enjoy. It will last in the fridge for at least 2 weeks.
Tips:
Don't use your best coffee for cold brew. The old, stale or cheap stuff tastes just as good because the cold brewing process extracts different flavors.
Pour cold brew coffee into ice cube trays and freeze. Now you can use them for your iced coffee or make frappes.
I have a Keurig so I'm a coffee n00b essentially. What's the difference between a coldbrew coffee and an iced coffee?
Iced coffee is hot brewed coffee that's cooled. Cold brewing is steeping coffee in cold water. Each process extracts different flavors from the coffee. I'm a coffee nerd and like to do side by side comparisons of the same beans, one hot brewed and one cold brewed.
We bought Grady's cold brew bean bags because we're lazy. Put a bag and 2 cups of water in the fridge overnight, take the bag out in the morning. No straining needed!
Do you grind your own beans? And if so, what type of grind is best?
I love cold brew coffee, and have been meaning to make it for a while.
I'm lazy and don't change grinder setting so it's espresso grind.
I bow to your coffee expertise, but I've found (through a LOT of cold brewing trial and error) that it really depends on your filter method. If I cold brew with my french press, coarser is better, but if I need a large batch, which means filtering through one of these--to which I add cheesecloth:
or if I use a regular filter (flaming pain in the ass), fine grind is good.
wowhead , how does this differ from making coffee, letting it come to room temp, and then refrigerating O/N?
I'm cutting out soda and could use a little caffeine in my life some days!
whereintheworld nailed it. Cold brew is less acidic and doesn't have the bitter notes that hot brewed has. I've even made cold brew with Folger's which I can't tolerate hot.

I cannot manage to get it from the room temp container through the the filter without 1) spilling it everywhere and 2) ending up with too much grounds left over.
What containers do you use? How do you pour from one to the other?

I use a big pitcher and pour it through a sieve lined in cheesecloth to another, slightly smaller, pitcher.
Jalapeñomel I use 2 32 oz deli containers (1 to brew in and another to strain and store in) and a Clever Coffee Dripper with a cone filter. The containers came from some carry out soup. They bend easily so I'm get less dripping and mess.
