Around 6:30-7:00. H comes home around that time, and I usually get home with the kids around 5:30, so I make dinner while they do their homework, and then we eat.
But, we are an active family with sports and activities so often we either scrounge an early dinner together at 5 for the boys before practice. Otherwise they would have to wait until after 7:30. Which they are just too hungry and cranky by then (even with a snack) so I try to do the earlier dinner for them and a snack after practice/games. DH and I eat afterwards usually.
DS usually eats between 5 and 5:30. When DH is home, we try to make a point to sit and eat together. But if it's just me at home and if I'm truly not hungry, I'll sit with DS but not eat and then throw something together later, after he's in bed.
What time do you all work till and how long is your commute? Also, are you making meals from scratch on weeknights? I typically work till 530 or 6 and my commute is about 35 minutes. If I cook when I get home I wouldn't eat till about 730 pm. But I often go workout after work so I'm not home till about 830 or 9 pm. If I don't go work out after work I'm so tired it makes it a challenge to cook, so I more snack. ie eat edamame and salads for dinner. I am single with no kids and only a dog to take care of
We used to eat around 630. Now that I started my new job a month ago, I'm all thrown off. I'm getting home around 6-630 now and we're eating anywhere between 730 and 9. It sucks because I'm not used to it and I'm starving.
It really depends on our schedule. Over the summer H works later hours and I wait to eat till he gets home (not because I have to but because I am lazy and H helps makes dinner lol), which is usually around 7. Other times, we wait till I get home from barre/spin (which is around 7:30). Last night we ate around 9:15. It varies anywhere from 5-10 but usually closer to 7/7:30.

Why do your inlaws comment? Why does it even matter to them? I don't know anyone who even gets home at 5, much less eats at 5. The earliest we eat is 7.

Did people in the 50s have different working hours? People ate as a family at 5 back then right? I don't leave work till 530 or 6. Even if the mom stayed home, wasn't there travel time, sports, etc?
If we eat as a family, it's around 6:30 (H gets home from work around 6-6:15)
1-2 days/week H works till 7 or 8, so usually DS and I will eat around 5:30. H eats dinner on his "lunch" break around 3-4 and will usually have cereal when he gets home.
On Saturday we typically do date night at home (or out, if we have a sitter), so we'll eat a late dinner after DS is in bed, around 9:30
Sunday we like to eat dinner early. We will either go out for brunch around 11 or make a big breakfast at home. So we are all ready to eat by 4-5pm.
