I am doing a 30 mile trail race in October. It is very laid back, pretty flat ( but still trail), however you have 30 hours. The race goes for 30 hours because you can do all different distances, including 100 plus. I chose 30 miles. Of course your time will suck if you take 30 hours, but I am going for the experience, not time. My friend said she did 15, took a nap, got food and then went back for 15 more.
The following weekend is a 39.3 challenge my friend REALLY wants me to do and I have to say it is appealing! I am not a fast runner at all, and running is hard for me. I keep trying though! He keeps telling me he has a lot of faith in me and my abilities and I just have to have faith in myself.
What do you think? Yes? No? Of course I would train and everything... If it helps, I am doing my first full on May 15th. I feel funny signing up for that 39.3 challenge before completing a full marathon, but I did sign up for 30 trail miles before completing a full marathon. I like to live on the edge. I would wait until after my marathon to decide, but the 39.3 challenge is limited to 200 people and I am afraid it will sell out.

I think I would do both individually, but not sure about the back to back w/e. It would be too much for me, I think?
These sort of questions are so hard to answer for someone else though. If your friends are doing both I can see it being fun, but back to back races exhaust me (and aren't really fair to my family, but this is so specific to each individual)

single with no kids! I have friends doing the trail race, and a friend doing the 39.3. I do not have friends doing both. Thanks for your input!
I have to say, it sounds appealing with the exception of the cost of the 39.3 challenge. I would have to get a hotel for two nights. I reserved a hotel because I can cancel it for free, and hotels were filling up. My friend said he was staying with someone, but then today he said he would split a hotel room with me.

It does sound a bit nuts to me (Just the back to back part), but I have met lots of people in the running community that do things that are a little crazy. The most important part seems to be that they want to do it and believe they can do it. My bet is if you decide to sign up for both you will be successful!

Hmmmmm. I'm a chronic overcommitter, so maybe don't take my advice. Ha! There is always next year too - you don't have to do both this year.

I hate to be a downer, but knowing your history that seems like a recipe for injury. I would stick with the 30 mile trail run (sounds fun!) and do a 39.3 another time.

I agree. I think you should do one or the other. That is a lot of miles in a week or 8 days. And you never know how your body is going to feel after a race of that length. I think it's a recipe for injury.
I would pick one or the other. You could always be a support person for your friend running the 39.3 and run part of the event but I don't think doing it the weekend after sounds smart. But if you can swing it financially, sign up and decide later.
I'd probably also do one or the other. The trail run sounds awesome, so I'd personally be inclined to do that this year and the 39.3 next year. My body gets delayed aches, so I'd probably be in prime ache mode for the 39.3 and it wouldn't be as enjoyable as it would if I signed up for it as a standalone event.
What is the 39.3 challenge like? Is there a time limit?
What's your base mileage like nowadays? How much are you planning to build up?
Personally I wouldn't do this because I agree it is just asking for an overuse injury like a stress fracture.
Yes. There is a 3 hour limit for the half and 6 for the full.
I actually ended up registering for the challenge.... and I hope by October I can resolve the issues I am having with the person I am sharing a hotel room with... because as of Friday we are no longer friends. I can always try to sell/transfer my bibs if it gets to that point.
I could probably not run 70 miles in one week. Aside from being abjectly mentally miserable, My form would suffer at both races. and the risk of injury is exponentially increased when you pump distance that high from one week to the next, so unless you're already at a base of 50mpw when you start training, and then have some steady 75-80 mile weeks to train through, I wouldn't chance it.
Also, what if you hate your marathon experience? I'm not saying that's a given but I know several people that are one and done, and actually mean it. I wouldn't risk the pressure of having to train for the back to back races with even an ounce of frustration or doubt.
Thanks for this. I did register; but I don't know why. I think I was excited at the thought and also I was excited to do this challenge with someone special. Unfortunately a lot has changed with that person in a very short period of time.
