Okay, I am a total asshole. I ordered DS's first birthday cake and made DD's first birthday cake. Ha ha. I totally forgot. But it was a standard boxed cake mix layer cake with store bought frosting. Didn't even take a photo of it. No wonder I forgot.
Naked cake is the saddest thing ever. Frosting is the best part of cake.
I hate cake and especially hate frosting. Are we still friends?
No.
Cake haters shouldn't make or have opinions on cake. You are now required by the law of cakeity to order a cake. You are unworthy to self bake. I will select the flavors.
No. We have made cakes for friends and their kids, but not for our own. We have too much to do on party days to worry about the cake (which is time intensive because we're perfectionists). It's much easier to just buy it and not have to worry. Also, the bakery we buy our cakes at makes delicious confections.
I really don't like store bought cakes, so I make all of mine. So far (3 years) it's been confetti angel food cupcakes with cream cheese whipped cream icing. I'll toss some sprinkles on top or use decorative toppers, but I'm going for flavor really. They are little airy puffs of heaven!

I will be making the cake for the baby unless I can find someone to make a cake she can eat with her intolerances. I will be buying a regular birthday cake for the guests. Honestly I would spend the $15 and get a grocery store sheet cake from whichever one has the best cake.
I always make my kids' cakes. The first year, I didn't really go all out because she wasn't even able to eat it. Being a preemie, she was only 9 months developmental, and not really on solid food yet. Fortunately, my decorating ability has improved since Abby was one.
My original plan was to make the cake but it was too overwhelming so I made the fondant decorations and ordered a plainly frosted grocery store sheet cake and put them on it. I made his smash cupcake though. It was a good compromise because I got to do the fun part.

I was ambitious. But DH helped me. We made a sheet sized lime yogurt cake with pineapple curd filling and coconut Swiss meringue buttercream. And chocolate cupcakes. I ate leftovers for months.
Last year we did a Wegmans cake because there was a wedding in the family the same weekend, but this year I'll probably try to make one again.
I'm an amateur but I like cake and to bake. Everything else on the Pinterest mom spectrum can jump in a lake, too lazy.
