The CAF is preparing to deploy all manner of aide required. We should soon be seeing a major transportation coordination to get those stranded without fuel out to safe towns, to provide food and first aid, as well as temporary shelters as required. The CAF has a lot of resources at their disposal beyond fire fighters, thank god.
True. I'm still reacting to my Facebook feed (which I've had to close) I'm surprised at the number of friends and friends of who seem to think if the army had been deployed sooner the town wouldn't be burning.
I may be doing another round of fb cleaning.
Yep. It's amazing how many people have come out of the woodwork to talk shit.

There is a lot of shit talking all over my Facebook.
I lived through the 2003 fires in Kelowna and I learned a lot from that. This isn't the governments fault, the military's or anyone else's. These things happen and there isn't much that can be done about it. Just keep on working and everyone is doing their best.

We were evacuated from Armstrong in 2004? 2005? During the falkland fire. It was so scary. Summer always brings out my anxiety because I'm constantly worrying about wildfires.
I've never really noticed how SO many people from our area are anti Trudeau until this! Everywhere I look on fb, people are blaming him and calling him out.

It's crazy! As if having a different PM would change the wild fires. People are crazy

I think people are just desperate to blame anybody, so they pick whoever is PM, premiere, etc. Last year during the La ROnge/Northern SK fires, people were blaming Mr Harper and Mr Wall for not deploying more firefighters/Army reserves. I think they just want to have something to anchor their worry and fear in. And if they didn't like the current leader in the first place, they just get that much more intense.
I think people want to see something being done. But that's not how things like wild fires and floods work. They do what they can but you can't put people in danger. Sometimes you have no choice but to let nature do its things and then pick up the pieces.
But right now, there's a lot of uncertainty and fear and stress in the province due to the recession and this just feels like another blow.
Notley leaving the $15 mil in the fire budget or a PC government wouldn't have stopped the fire from starting and once it had, well it was already too late given the weather (dry, hot and wind)
But people want to blame and they've already decided the premier and pm are never going to do anything right so whether they move left or right, it was wrong. Even if precious govt would have done the same.
I have given up trying to talk reason or facts. I imagine it's like trying to talk to a Trump supporter.
My BIL's helicopter squadron is up there with the air force now. We're all of course equal parts worried and proud. I think I'm going to talk to dh about donating some money to red Cross or something else. 80,000 people displaced...
gibbinator- I hope your BIL and his squadron stay safe up there.
I just heard word from my cousins FI, he is still up in one of the camps and being told he may not be able to make it home for days. I thought he got home last week but I was wrong.
I'm all for a wall that will keep Trump out. And even if we had him (shudder), he would be able to do exactly what they are doing now. Sitting and waiting with the rest of us, while the firefighters and emergency responders do their jobs to the best of their ability. Small update for those who care: The fire is now 85000 hectares (same size as city of Calgary), the wind is pushing it more south (still gusting to 40 km/h), but it is so hot and huge right now it is creating its own wind and lightning strikes. They are focusing on protecting the critical infrastructure, and protecting parts of the city that they can. The temperature has dropped from 30C yesterday to 17C today, so that is helpful, but still really low humidity which is not helping. They are flying evacuees out of some of the northern camps down to Calgary and Edmonton to where there is more supplies and support. Man, I hope it rains up there soon, it would be so helpful to the firefighters.
I've been checking news sites but many of them aren't really saying much right now.
Hopefully the cooler weather today, and the possibility of rain help the fire out.
You're welcome. My job involves a lot of driving, so I pretty much have the radio on all the time. Our SK talk-radio station has been carrying large amounts of coverage of the fire (they have a Listen Online thing at ckom.com if you are interested), and they aired the official press conference update this morning, that's where I got my info from. I imagine news sites will soon carry that info online too.
And yes, the size of Calgary. Yesterday it was only 10 000 hectares, so it is 8x bigger today.
About the animals, I think some people didn't even have time to go back to their house and retrieve their pets, because they worked on the opposite side of the city and had to leave immediately. Which is heartbreaking. Pretty much as they were evac-ing people tuesday night, I saw things being shared on facebook that mentioned there were officials from the municipality that would go check on/retrieve the pets if you emailed/called them. So hopefully many were taken care of that way.
ETA: It's actually amazing that no one has been hurt or died yet, considering many people there work shift work, and so were sleeping when mandatory evacuations started. I heard people were going door to door waking neighbours up and getting them out. Lots of them live in a trailer park subdivision which was one of the first ones the fire hit.

There have been two fatalities - there was a vehicle crash as people were evacuating. </3 I'm amazed that it hasn't been more. SO far we have two relatives still up north, working at camps. They aren't allowed to leave yet because there is no safe passage. The rest of their families are safe though, but one has lost everything.

I have heard of this but the rumor that I heard was that it was in a different area and it actually caused a wild fire where the accident was. I haven't been able to find any more info on it.

Oh, I didn't know that. That's sad. No fire-related deaths, though, I don't think?

The crash was hwy 881 (if anyone is familiar with the area) - I just saw a fb update that said the firefighters in ft Mac were able to save the house of the woman who died. So her family should be able to salvage some memories. My heart broke again
Eta: it would have been an evacuation route I guess to a community south of ft Mac. But yes, no deaths directly related to the fire.
