I want to send my step-mom flowers for mother's day. Her son died last fall, so it's probably going to be really hard for her this year. We're not very close, but I want to let her know I'm thinking of her. I am bad with words/emotions, and I have no idea what to say in the card. Any help?

I would just tell her I was thinking of her and that I love her (if you do) and maybe even include a nice memory of her son. There is no pretending it's a pleasant day but moms always appreciate good memories of their children. I think it's OK to say you're upset and not sure what to say but she is on your mind.
"Just wanted to add a bit of brightness and let you know I am thinking of you today (and all days!)." with an optional something about being there to talk if she wants to, if that is something you/she would be open to.
Agreed that a simple "thinking of you and your son" message is enough. If you feel this way, you could let her know that she was a great mother and her son is remembered.

Part of the reason I feel awkward about it is that I barely knew her son. Her and my dad were only married a year when he passed, and I had only met him a few times.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'll probably just keep it simple and let her know I'm thinking of her.

I should probably do this for my Dad's wife. I'm sure it's a hard day for her since she is estranged from her kids and my Dad is in a nursing home. Nice idea! Definitely a Thinking of You approach.
