It's unfortunate you didn't know there was an internal candidate. 9 times out of 10 when there's an internal it's already decided.
I've added a few recruiters I've had good experiences with to my LinkedIn. So there is that option. One even contacted me again later.
I am sorry to hear your job is that bad now. I've been there and it was awful. I got lucky, right as I couldn't take it anymore the company sold and awful boss was moved away from me and I got into a better job. Unfortunately it was not a short timeframe. But it did lead to the cliched better.
It was between me and an internal candidate and they went internal. This is a company that is known for promoting from within, and is very pro their brand, so this is not surprising.
The recruiter said she loved working with me and to reach out if I see any other opps on their site.
I am devastated. I am going to be unemployed soon. I don't know what to do.
I am so so sorry. I know it sucks right now but this is just temporary. Sonehring will happen for you mp!
Are you in CA? Is SDI an option for you? It wouldn't be a long term solution but if work is that bad it would give you a break and buy some time to figure something out.

I'm so sorry Hopefully there will be the ideal opening for you soon.
I also want to suggest looking into SDI, you can learn more here - www.edd.ca.gov/disability/FAQ_DI_Eligibility.htm It talks about non-work related disability but you may still have a claim, I'm not sure.
I do know from a friend that used it that you can't collect SDI and unemployment at the same time, that may be a consideration for you, or not, you know your situation best.

I'm really sorry, but the perfect job for you will absolutely come along!
It sucks to be in such a rough situation at your current job; I've been there before and I can commiserate with what you are feeling. I wish the best for you. <3
I am so sorry. I would go around your boss at this point too. I had a similar situation years ago at my current job and I just kept going to HR over and over. Eventually they had enough ammo to fire my asshat of a boss and kept me. Do other coworkers share the same issues with your boss? Could you go to HR as a group? I did this with my immediate reports and it was received very well. I hope you have a good HR person. Many hugs to you. Like jigsy said you are awesome! Don't let this get you down, keep moving forward in whatever way possible to get yourself to a better place emotionally.
Can you go out on medical leave and look for a job while you're out? If you're having anxiety attacks at your office then I thou might be able to use your disability insurance and CA disability, which I think pays pretty well.
