WTF I have a plant growing through my staircase

OK, I'll tell you. At LEAST 10 ft. long. The part  you see there was the only green part. The rest was dry/dead.

Omg. I also have a damp crawlspace and the former owners had a hole in the floor for some wire and I'm sure H didn't seal it correctly. So I feel like I need to know more here.
10 ft long? Like 10 ft down into the hole, or 10 ft across the floor under the carpet on its way from the hole?

And plants totally do that. We did experiments in kindergarten where we planted a seed and then built a shoebox structure around it- the plant would grow sideways, diagonally, whatever to get to the light.
