Will urgent care prescribe Xanax?

Maybe call first? My H has a prescription and whenever I pick up refills, I have to show i.d. Xanax is a schedule 4 drug. Not sure. (LOL guess that's no help.)

Well, upon googling, it seems to depend on the doctor (and possibly the state). If you don't mind potentially wasting a copay, you could try.

My guess is it might be easier to get just a couple for the travel days.

I highly doubt it. I don't know why you broke up with your PCP, but could you call and see if they could extend (not a full refill) a few pills for your trip?

Mine has in the past when a visit to my prescribing doctor was not a timely option.

I doubt urgent care will help. I would call your new PCP and explain the urgency of your request. Maybe they'll get you in sooner, or allow you to see someone else in their practice before your trip.

Mine did when I went in for a panic attack but they only gave me like 6 pills. It was enough to get me to my next dr. appt.

It depends on the state. In NY they can give you less than a week's supply. My friend gets like one Ativan to fly with. Last time I was in a similar situation and said I had trouble getting an appointment with a psychiatrist the doctor at the UC picked up the phone and voila, got me an appointment. Good luck.

How badly did you break up with your PCP? Is there anyway you can call and ask for a refill without being seen to bridge the gap?

Possibly? They did for me after my dad passed and I was out of my home area. They actually did it after a phone consultation and checking my medical records, because getting in for an appointment was nearly impossible for me with everything else that was going on.

If you have never had it prescribed for you, how do you know it will work? I would not a doctor who is not, does not plan to be a long termer with me to prescribe me drugs like that. This is for your safety.

I was prescribed xanax in an urgent care just this week. I was in need at that very moment though, so that may have been the only reason.

Im in NY and have gotten xanax from urgent care before a trip. I also went to the same urgent care all the time because I didn't have a PCP and the co-pay was cheap.

I have no idea but the first time we took our dog on a trip she freaked out about staying in a hotel room. We called the vet and they called in a prescription at a nearby CVS for Xanax for our dog. And they filled it. I couldn't believe it! Do you have a dog?

It totally depends but I wouldn't count on it. Most places are really cracking down on scheduled drugs. If you have never been on it I would sort of doubt that they would give it to you. ERs do give it sometimes but then only a few. It is highly addictive and if you came to see me (I'm in primary care) you would not get it...ever (our clinic has very strict policies regarding scheduled drugs). If anxiety was a regular thing I would give you buspar and if you needed something for panic attacks I would give you vistaril (which is not a scheduled drug).
Now if you just needed one or two for a plane ride or something they might do that but I still wouldn't necessarily count on it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume the reason you won't prescribe scheduled drugs is that you aren't a doctor. Xanax is only schedule IV and does not require a triplicate; it's normally not that hard to get.

CDC guidelines for opioids changed a few months ago.

(OP: the new guidelines affect xanax if you are already on an opioid.)

I'm a PA and I can prescribe scheduled drugs just like physicians can. Our clinic just has strict policies on scheduled drugs as we have a huge problems with drug abuse in this town. I know there are plenty of prescribers out there that give it out like candy, including some ERs, but most places are really cracking down on handing out narcs and benzos without too much thought

Yup, I'm a PA as well.  The DEA is really cracking down on this and flagging providers for over prescribing.  

OP, you should call first especially because you've never taken it before.  I would be more likely to Rx someone an emergency refill for a few days worth if they've already been on it (with proof).  If someone had never been on it before, I'd tell them to see his/her PCP.
