I think there is room for compromise. I'd be ok with limiting it to hunting rifles only. I think it's beyond obvious by now that the semi automatic weapons have to go. I don't see the need for handguns either but that's me.
I would support seeing gun laws made at a national level. I don't understand why they aren't.
NRA, baby. I'd LOVE to know the inner workings and how exactly they got to be SO damn powerful. They managed to outlaw RESEARCH into gun violence. RESEARCH!!!! The people who voted that in - I feel like the NRA MUST have dirt on them.

I was reading yesterday that Rob Portman in Ohio is running for reelection this year, he's blocked gun control. His opponent is in favor of gun control and it's one of three seats that can turn the tide on the issue. I'm really excited to vote this year!

Many hunting rifles ARE semi automatic. Like..millions. its like people say they are cool with the hunting community but have no idea what they are talking about. Some people hunt bows. Some hunt bolt action and some hunt semi automatic. Some hunt all three seasons...all different types of animals.
Its..kind of disrespectful to look at a person and say " i clearly dont know or care about you but let me tell you the change you need to make"

Decisions, decisions.
On one side, hunters who like using semiautomatics for sport. On the other side, hundreds of people killed in mass shootings.
I understand why you guys are so torn. But what do I know, I am Canadian.

I'm sorry I didn't mean to be disrespectful. I was just trying to say that I know there are a lot of positives to hunting so I don't think all guns have to be banned. But at the same time, guns that can shoot 50 people in a couple of minutes are problematic. Isn't there room to come to some compromise?

Semi automatic is such a WIDE term.
Shotguns that can fire 3 shells are considered "semi automatic"
Maybe step 1 to this discussion and debate should be more clear definitions around weapons.

It's very common for gun rights people to focus on what gun control people get wrong about guns as a way of discounting anything else they have to say.
The gun rights people will insist that gun control should be created by those who understand guns, yet they aren't doing it! Oh, they'll agree we need "sensible" gun control but freak out when any kind of legislation is even considered.
So guess what, if the gun community won't push for gun control then it's left to those who don't understand guns.
Currently the gun community is not worthy of respect, not until they actively do something about our country's gun problem or maybe even admit that it exists.

No one cares if you want to go hunting. But if you are arguing (husband of old college friend) that the Constitution gives you the right to do so with whatever type of weapon you choose, GTFO.
Use the weapons that were around when the amendment was written and keep semi automatic weapons out of the hands of the general public.

I have no problem with some hunting rifles, shotguns, small pistols, etc. but NOBODY needs an assault or automatic weapon. THEY JUST DON'T.
My uncle has a fucking bunker under his house. He owns every GD type of gun known to man and a TANK. A tank. I have a relative that owns a MFing tank. In Waco a few weeks ago the bomb squad was on the news because of something my OTHER uncle gave my sister when she was like, 10 and it was accidentally left behind when they moved. The new owners thought it was a live torpedo or some such. I am seriously related to these fuckers. They are fucking idiots and I want their weapons taken away.
a- you can still own your grandfathered machine gun
b-Â Â You can take an air soft gun, buy a few random parts and create a legit badass gun.
c- you can modify a non semi automatic gun and easily make it into a semi with legal and legitimate parts.
I definitely think types of ammunition should be banned completely. Â Rounds should be limited.
I get your points, and agree with you. I just meant it's probably a lot easier to create new regulations this way than trying to amend the constitution.
I think my issue with the 2nd amendment (and, I mean, I am not American, so there's that), is that is implies that owning a gun is a RIGHT. I don't believe that owning a gun should be a RIGHT for anybody. I think it can be a requirement of someone's job (police, military, etc), but I don't think it is a RIGHT.
That being said, I also believe that access to affordable health care (and by affordable, I really just mean free, lol), is a RIGHT. lol. Again, Canadian. I will see myself out now.

You know what else is disrespectful?
Killing 49 people with a SAW.
What is the correct term to use? I almost wrote assault weapon because that's what the media seems to use most but then I saw on CEP that that phrase is very controversial and considered by some to be disrespectful. I thought the gun this guy used was a semi automatic weapon?
Yes, it is my number one issue in this election. My heart just cannot take anymore. Something MUST be done. Millions of peaceful Americans rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are being infringed upon by a very loud and powerful lobby. It's not right.

I don't care about the term used to describe the type of gun being used, or that some people who hunt with a semi automatic weapon are offended by the public calling for a ban on them for everyone. Joe Schmo doesn't need one, and neither does a hunter.

Ok well, I am not a legislator nor am I a gun rights person. I am fine saying that Im for magazine limits, strong background checks etc. I also believe that we will make change when we value life more than killing overall.
However. I dont think people who know guns will go for a ban on semi automatic guns because its so wide reaching. I have personally heard this explained many times to people who don't know as much about guns.
a friend of mine on facebook posted something that really resonated with me. He is gun owner (licensed) and he said that he wouldn't have ever been able to protect anyone in that club bc he is a responsible gun owner that would NEVER bring a gun to a club where he might be drinking.
And he was asked about what if this was a convenience store or a supermarket and he said that he owns guns for hunting and to protect his house. but he wouldn't ever be irresponsible enough to be toting it around bc his fear is that he would accidently shoot someone innocent.

Ok. You are anti gun. And you need to admit that its you who doesnt want to have a conversation.

EDIT: this is in response to the people saying "well if at least one person had a gun this wouldn't have happened (i.e my cousin)

I dont disagree at all. Please dont try to pin on me some idea that i am not horrified or heart sick over this event.

Exactly this.
We own 6 shotguns. For hunting and sporting clay shooting.
When my husband isn't hunting or we aren't sporting clay shooting (I don't hunt) they are locked in the gun safe.
Several of them are termed "semi automatic" but WAY different than the "semi automatic" that are used to commit these mass shootings (they can hold and shoot 3 shells rather than just two. The "semi automatic" term and definition is SO weird)
For us? Our guns would be useless for "home defense" because they're locked in a gun safe, unloaded, and the shells are kept in a separate location away from the guns. That's the responsible way to keep guns.
Even when we have them in a vehicle with us (on the way to the range or hunting) they are kept unloaded and shells kept separate.
And in order to obtain them, we had to be fingerprinted, undergo background checks and have references complete surveys and Mail those in. I think it was 4-6 weeks for me to obtain my gun card.
I don't see ANY reason anyone needs the type of guns that fire off a dozen rounds rapidly. They aren't really made for hunting.
Heck - I think the idea of a hand gun "for self defense" is stupid. (Odds are someone is going to get hurt by the gun vs. it being effectively used for "self defense").
So, I'm all for more regulation around guns. We live in a state that is highly regulated and my husband can still hunt and enjoy sporting clay shooting. If the type of laws that exist here existed across the country - then there wouldn't be these mass shootings.
