I think it's fine if they've already decided. I don't think that it's a must. I think that those doctors are kind. I lack the empathy that they have in that situation.

I thought that prison was supposed to be punishment. Pretty sweet deal, GIS non-murdering-type folks who can't afford the surgery are suffering. You go to prison, you stay a while, bam, 20K (plus?) surgery!

Incarceration is punishment. Denial of medical care is cruel and unusual punishment.
Ah. So what are we doing about all of those people who need the surgery and can't afford it?

Perhaps the doctors exercised empathy here in addition to their role as the medical experts, but they can look at the cold, hard facts of a case and deem it medically necessary. That's their value in this situation.

Haven't people been committing crimes to get medical treatment for free for a really long time? I'm sure I saw an episode of whatever CSI-like show was on in the 90s of an elderly gentleman robbing a bank (so it was a federal crime) so he could get treatment for his cancer.
And Scotty - i'll try to dig up a good book for you on GID.
I'm pretty sure people generally go after healthcare companies who deny patients treatments while under their care. I mean we go after school districts who fail to provide adequate services and accommodations to children, insurance companies who refuse to cover treatments for no good reason, etc.
There are people in this country who don't eat, pay their electric, live on the streets because they can't afford it or are struggling or have mental illnesses. This has yet to be motivation enough to herd prisoners in a fenced in area and give them only cardboard boxes on which to sleep and watered down gruel to eat.
Does anyone pay attention to Annette Bening and Warren Beatty's son Stephen Ira? He is pretty interesting and smarter than all of us. Hetalksreallyfast. Anyway, he is transgendered.
So, continuing on the "if it was my child" thread... what if it was YOUR child that had gender dysmorphia? Forget the prison thing... but it sounds like a lot of people just don't quite understand the condition and the kind of havoc it can wreak on someone's life. What if it was your child who, from the moment they were born, felt that they didn't belong, didn't know what their role was, felt constant confusion as to every single thought and emotion they had. Now tell me it's not as important as chemo treatment for a cancer victim.
I don't think anyone is questioning the general importance of the surgery, it's this specific instance that's the issue.
