I have a couple of pairs of Cole Haans that are ok. I love my Tieks tho. I have only one pair, wear them almost every day and they don't smell yet. I will say that based on what I'd heard I was expecting them to be like walking on clouds. They aren't. But they are amazing once they get broken in a bit. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
PS I was going to PM you today. A insisted on wearing the Sofia the First sweatshirt today. It's 80+ degrees and a size too big. Whatever. She walked into daycare and proudly showed it off to all of her friends. She couldn't be happier. THANK YOU!!!
So normally I am all about the pricey shoes but I have been surprisingly impressed with the $20 (even less if you get them BOGO50% off) Payless dexflex flats. Probably worth the $20 to try!

I wear these almost 100% of the time at work.
I'd like to see a comparison between these and the Tieks, TBH. Because I really do wonder if those shoes are REALLY worth the $$.
I almost asked the exact same question this morning! I think I'm going to buy myself Tieks for my birthday. I've been wearing a pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs flats daily but they are on their last legs now.
I have the Cole Hann ones with the Nike air in them- so comfy.
I also second the lucky brand emmie flats. Very rarely can I put on shoes and not have some type of rubbing until they are broken in. Not the case with these from the minute I put them on sooooooo comfy.

I used to love the Lucky Emmie flats (I have a gold pair that I really like) but then I recently ordered a black pair and the leather was so thin it felt like my big toe was going to poke right through, so I sent them back. I feel like the quality varies greatly on those.
I have been having the exact same problem this week. I went to DSW to try on Nikes and had my Cole Haan ballet shoes in my hand as I was walking around and they smelled so bad that I decided to throw them away as soon as I got home. I just bought these from Zappos
I have several pairs of Tieks and I wear mine almost every day. I ordered the incorrect size the first time around, but contacted their customer service right away and they were really fantastic in helping me figure out the right size and fit for my feet. They have just about every color you could think of and they really are super comfy! I have heard of people adding an orthotic but I personally do not. Since I have been through the Tieks exchange process I can tell you they make it really easy to try a pair and see if they work for you. As long as you only wear them inside, you can always return or exchange them if they don't work out. Good Luck!
- J Crew (sometimes as low as $40-60 when on sale) - Cole Haan (on sale on Amazon all the time for $50-100) - Lucky (as low as $20 on Amazon, depending on color)
