I don't know if you can tell, but that's high wind, plus 12-24" chop. Plus all the disgusting debris one lake can churn up over five hours. And I stuck it out for 10k+! Regardless of the fail, I gave it 110% and I'm so sore and exhausted, I know I couldn't have done more. I mantra'd "adversity can kiss my ass" through most of it, lol.
Also, I'm proud of how straight I swam without a kayak guide. R had to bail after the first lap because it was too rough for the kayak. Look at this:
That's three half laps (.6 miles) and four long laps of just over a mile (we set out to circumnavigate, but without a kayak, I had to keep going back to the beach for food). Only on the last lap did I deviate (because it was so choppy at that point, I got pushed into the shoreline).
And finally, being a good citizen does pay off. I dragged these off the bottom on my last lap:
Those are $160 sunglasses, in pretty good shape for having sat on the bottom of a lake for God knows how long. Hooray!
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.

Thank you ladies! I'm not down on myself at all over this. In fact, I feel like a total badass and ready to taper for that 10 miler. I know how hard I can push and I'm ready! (Provided the lake doesn't preclude my kayaker, in which case, I may end up hitching my wagon on the 1 or 3 mile race).
It was an amazing experience, and the best part was that I stayed out of the negative thoughts I'm prone to when things get hard. I just kept getting more and more determined, instead.
