I stopped at a gym, which was a church, on my lunch. I tried 2 different areas of the parking lot and was told the gym was too far. WTF?!? Do I have to be at the front door?

@fs, can I steal that pic? I love it!
I found it on IG, it isn't mine so go for it. I don't play the pokemans
Went to the nature preserve by my house last night...zero Pokemon even though there's a gym and pokestop there! BUUUT we did find two turtles mating! Lololol.
I was wondering if this is using all of my data. Can anyone confirm?
Also I'm not near a gym. I need to wander soon.
I found a site that tested it by running the app for an hour and music streaming for the same hour (that is usually my biggest data hog). The pokemon app used almost 5 times as much data. Yike.
Yes! You still get experience points, stardust, and candy for that Pokemon, plus more candy if you transfer dups to the professor. You can use stardust/candy to increase your pokemon's strength or evolve to the next level.
Buzzkill - you can only share incense if you're near a poke stop. Otherwise you're the only that will see the Pokemon. hamster
Incense and lures are two different things. Incense you can use only on yourself, but you can use it anywhere. Lures are used on pokestops, and the effect is only found near the pokestop.
ETA: Also, you're wrong about the second part, too. If the pokemon is in the area, anyone can see it regardless of what's being used, and multiple people can catch it. At least, that's what I've been seeing.
Ooooh. My h and I have been trying unsuccessfully to share incense but we've never seen the same Pokemon while only one of us are using incense. We can definitely catch the same one on a normal basis though. Last night we walked by another couple downtown who informed us a Vulpix was around the corner.
You can use it to evolve your pokemon or make your pokemon stronger
But. How?
If you go into your pokemon section (not the Pokedex) you can pick one and it will have a Power Up option and possibly an evolve option. Power up costs stardust and pokemon candy and it increases the CP. Evolve changes it into a different pokemon but just costs candy (although more of it)

When you catch a pokemon, scroll all the way down on his info page and you should see a transfer button under the map that shows where you caught him.
Also, catching a pokemon you already have will still give you 100 xp each. Catching is the easiest way to level up.
And in case anyone hasn't discovered the option, you can set your game to Battery Saver. That way, when the game is open just turn your phone upside down. This makes the screen go dark but will keep the game running. Set your phone to vibrate to know when a pokemon has popped up on the map.

So should I power up? Or save my candies for evolving?

I'm not positive I'm doing it right, but I've been saving my candies to evolve and then power up when my pokemon is fully evolved.

We live next to a stream/valley and have had at least four groups walk by today. I finally asked the last group if they were playing Pokemon and they are. It's usually just us and two families with dogs walking through here. Nice to meet some new faces. I'm tempted to put a jug of water out for them since it's so hot.
