Is this a thing in Texas or something? Am I missing something?
Are there regional racist slurs that go on?
This is not a regional racial slur. Jiggaboo and picaninny have been around for a very, very long time. These are not brand new. Let me see if I can dredge up a link.

Guys, even I know what that word means and I grew up in a state with like 2% black people. That teacher needs to be fired. It is terrifying to me that people who think using these words are ok are teaching our children

This is not a regional racial slur. Jiggaboo and picaninny have been around for a very, very long time. These are not brand new. Let me see if I can dredge up a Heard of picaninny, mostly down south though. My east Texas friend didn't know what the hell was going on when I almost got into a fight with someone who called me a coco. She never heard that before.
I mean, I live here and all, but I am reasonably certain it is not a regional thing.
I have been stationed all over the us, ok mostly the west coast, I am a die hard jersey girl, mixed race and if you asked me yesterday if I had seen and heard them all I would have told you yes. I feel like a stupid naive asshole.
Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't make it regional.
Thanks, would not have known otherwise. What made me *think* it was regional was the many times it was said or alluded to that she's from Texas, she knew what she was saying. Texas is not a region of the country I am familiar with and thought maybe that is why I did not know what the word was. Duly noted.
Of all the ridiculous racism defenses I've heard over the years (and read here), "but I thought they were talking about clowns" is definitely a new one.

I'm from 95% white land and I knew that was racist growing up in the 80's and 90's. Plus, they are 6th graders and she teaches these preteens, so why would she want what she thought was a "nonsense" word to name the class anyway. What does that teach them about being responsible and growing into middle schoolers?!
I don't think I've heard anyone say it (except as sung in hair), and I couldn't tell you when or where I learned, but I definitely knew the word was a slur well before college. I probably read it somewhere and asked my dad.
That's why I'm not in favor of sanitizing books. Kids need these discussions in a classroom setting because if they hear these words in their community they're definitely not being educated on the history.

Why don't you look up Insane Clown Posse and see how similar the words are before you start slinging shit. So fuck off with your racism defenses.

You do realize insane clown posse is ALSO not appropriate for a class, though, right? Juggalos would not be appropriate either. So even if you confused those words, it STILL doesn't make a lick of sense. And your defensiveness here isn't earning you any points.

I really don't see a single reason why, in the age of smart phones and the literal goddamn internet at your fingertips, people don't google shit. I mean, I google ALL THE GODDAMN TIME. Stupid shit like "where are blue footed boobys native to" and "what's the longest string of world series trips" and I sure as shit would be googling a phrase I claim to not know before I name my damn classroom that.
So when 13 year olds are sent to me for using inappropriate language and they tell me that they used it but didn't know what it meant/didn't mean it that way, I don't believe them (to be fair, it is usually in the context of calling someone an inappropriate word/name).
I expect the adults educating those 13 year olds to know better than that.
I got very angry at my brother once and called him a big beluga. I had no idea what that was, but thought it souneed insulting. I was very dissapointed to learn it is a whale.

I'm well aware of Insane Clown Posse and fully aware of how grossly inappropriate they are for 6th graders. You are the only one slinging shit and defending racism so you can be the one to fuck off.
I also don't remember hearing this term, but somehow it's pinging in my head. Which means I probably have heard of this and it is buried in my mind. That is reason enough for me to either, research it first, or just not use it at all.
Here y'all go. Link to a racial slur database. Read this and be informed. There are some very obvious slurs - I think jiggaboo is an obvious - but there are things you may want to use with care.

Absolutely it is inappropriate. Which is exactly why I took a step back when it was pointed out to me that I was looking at it from MY pov it, I acknowledged that was the wrong way to look at it.
I didn't realize we were on a point system here, please tell me all about it.

wait, what? I can't go to her link, work has it blocked as hate related for fairly obvious reasons. Are you being serious?
Somebody please tell me that we have not had a running family joke about calling people "big belugas" for the past 29 years and it's actually a slur.

Girl, get off the internet and go do something you enjoy. You are very angry about this telling people to fuck off and everything. Just, calm down. MY point was that you were giving the teacher the benefit of the doubt, which I am not about to do. You admitted you were giving her the benefit of the doubt. The rest of us aren't here for that. You thought this word meant another COMPLETELY inappropriate term, so of course we don't understand why you thought that made it okay. It was a ridiculous stance to take, in my opinion. But feel free to tell me to fuck off if it makes you feel better. Capslocks tend to make me feel better, personally.
No one on here thinks you were racist. People DO think your argument here was a bad argument.

Ok hmfic of the internet, I never said she was right, I said people can think one way about a word and it's wrong, what got me pissed was the insinuation I was defending racism.

Wrong.
Baluga with an "a" can be used as an ethnic slur. Why? Because it's the Filipino equivalent of the n-word.

You don't know my lyfe. Lol. I wasn't pissed at you and I went off on you. Apologies for that, now I will die on thyme defending racism hill if I have to. ]

A beluga with an "e" is a whale.
You are right when I get insulted and called a big beluga I stop and say was that an a or e, I should know if you are calling me fat or something worse.
