H's BFF is a black history professor. He always buys DD black related gifts. I love it.
Are there any good black history books for toddlers? A pic came up on FB of Fredrick Douglass because yesterday was the day he escaped from slavery and it was DD's birthday. So she was asking me questions but I didn't know how to explain him to a toddler. And when I tried it just led to more questions.
I have a feeling this thread is going to be bad for my wallet.
I buy most of S & J's books from the "used" section of Amazon. You can still use Prime for some of them and they are usually around or less than $4. Our books are very well loved, lol. S sleeps with 3-4 of them in his bed every night
Cool. I didn't even think of that for books for my kids! You wise woman you, thanks!
I don't go here, and I apologize if this is an intrusion. I saw this thread pop up on the recent posts and my librarian heart clicked automatically. I just wanted to drop this link, the movement "We Need Diverse Books" has lists of resources, including reading lists, and a link list where you can find books that represent POC and other groups underrepresented in literature.
I just posted this info in one of the MMM threads and am xping here in a slightly different context. DD and I are reading a book right now by this year's Pura Belpré award winner. It's not the book that won the award, but I highly recommend it to the MOOKs. it's the story, in verse, of one of Cuba's leading Abolitionists. It's called "The Lightning Dreamer" and I've been gushing about it since we picked it up earlier in the week. More info on the award and award winners is below.
*** The award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. It is co-sponsored by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), and REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, an ALA affiliate.
I am currently working my way down a rabbit hole of toddler/childrens' books because I wanna get my nephew something semi useful (and portable!) for my trip to BCN for his first b-day.
A lot of these he may be too young for now, but I want him to have a nice little library started, courtesy of his Titi Bimbi.
I am thinking of getting the A is for Activist (thanks for recommending that, @natariru,! You are to blame for this, rabbit hole btw, lol) in both English and Spanish.
