Yes, I have to occasionally travel to other sites which are day trips. More rarely I have an overnight stay.
How are you losing flexibility for travel? Did they tell you NOT to work OT?
Correct. We are absolutely not to go over. We can go a little over/under on a specific day as long as the week equals exactly 40 hours. It just involves paying close attention and more math than I'd like.

My brain isn't working this morning. Why does it matter that this was an Obama appointed judge? Is it that we didn't expect one of his appointees to do this? When I saw the judge was from TX I actually thought "yup - that makes sense"
While this is frustratingly last-minute and will cause a lot of headaches for nearly every company (aside from that one that pays everyone $70k...provided folks there are properly classified from a duties standpoint), the bigger implications of this are promising as we head into a Trump administration.
Though he has wielded his executive & administrative powers for good, Obama has expanded the role of the executive branch. Now more than ever, we need the judiciary to provide a check on that before Trump & his agencies use the same for evil.
I am VERY interested in seeing how they reign in the NLRB. They have been getting on my damn nerves. However I speak as someone who works in an HR department who has implemented very generous employee friendly policies. I acknowledge many people are not that lucky and do not know their rights.
You are not alone.
Ironically, a key demographic where Trump made huge gains compared to Romney (at least in key electoral states) were union households. I don't see him being particularly beholden to them, though.

Helps to reinforce that the judiciary is nonpartisan.

That makes sense. I was interpreting it to mean a bad thing and couldn't figure out what that was.

Yeah, and on election night Trump enterprises was determined to have violated the NLRA and interfered with the election of a union to represent some of his employees in Vegas.
Thing is, unions have historically had issues with racism. They fought affirmative action big time in the 80s. what this election showed me is racism and misogyny are still more important to some people and I will be laughing my ass of at them when he pushes through changes that are anti labor.

Damn, that really sucks
Yeah, it does, but ::nervous laugh:: at least I still have a job. I work for a women's health clinic and my specific program offers cholesterol and blood sugar screening which is helpful to our population because a lot of them only get medical care from us. This is all funded by the CDC, so I'm not optimistic that the next administration will find it valuable.

We also implemented this already and many of us have already had to use vacation time payouts to cover the loss in pay (48 hours). It was already so f-ed up that our university implemented it this particular month/pay cycle with the holidays and such. Its one of the reasons I'm even at work today. Grrrr.
This is crazy. My friend in HR has been working on implementing changes since May and just pushed everything through. MH was reclassified to hourly just last week. I really don't understand how it got this far for a judge to block it at the last minute.
Yikes. My company implemented this at the end of September, AND retroactively paid us for OT we should've received over the past 2 years had we been non-exempt like we were supposed to be (not sure why they did this, honestly). I was moved from salaried to non-exempt because of my duties, and we were also told to limit any OT as much as possible. I work in IT - shit breaks, and I can't just say "Well, that's 40 hours! I'll fix this next week!" and walk out. It's insane.
I am so upset and directly effected by this. I am salaried at 40 hours, but work anywhere between 45-65 hours per week, whether at home, or in the office, working through lunch etc. I was told that I needed to start delegating my work because my boss doesn't want to pay OT. It is what it is. I was happy that I was going to start only working 40 hours per week and begin getting my sanity back...nope. Guess my sanity is on hold.
So until this is no longer on hold, I guess I am still expected to work all those hours, which hardly gives me anytime to look for another job...UGH
Also, we all know that Douchald Trump will most likely try to end that because of his businesses. I hate everything...

You were most likely being misclassified the whole time.

Yeah people. Now is not the time to be complaining about the judiciary stepping in when the executive tries to rule through regulation something legislation hasn't expressly authorized him to do.

So... we have spent ridiculous hours trying to figure this out at work. I kept telling HR, kind of joking, just to give everyone raises to get over the threshold and got withering glances in return. I was told that it's salary AND duties- is that right? So even if people made over the threshold, if their duties weren't supervisory, etc., they were non-exempt.

This is correct, it's and not or.
Our HR dept looked at everyone's job descriptions and some people earning above $50K went to hourly because their jobs weren't truly exempt positions. Others received the raise and went exempt because their job description warranted it. I work at a university so there are big differences if funding between departments. HR said they were worried about audits.

There has always been a duties test but people have probably been misclassified as exempt when they were non exempt.
That being said one can pass the duties test even if they do not supervise any staff as long as they have decision making ability or are certain types of skilled professionals.
