Yay!
Why are CS anti-medicine? Is it a pray and god will heal" thing? Is that in the bible somewhere? (I skipped the boring parts.)
Are CS completely NO MEDICINE EVER or can you take aspirin for headaches and stuff? Is relying on folk remedies ok? What about alternative healing like chiropractors, acupuncture or homeopathy?

They believe that they can heal themselves like Jesus healed - so it's definitely a "pray and god will heal" thing. And to be honest, I have witnessed some pretty miraculous healings, which shows you how amazing the human brain and body are.

Some CS are completely no medicine ever, including folk remedies, homeopathy, chiropractors, acupuncture and aspirin. The majority of CS don't drink, smoke or do any kind of drugs, including caffeine. Some are less observant, and some may rely on medicine when they feel a problem is too big for them to handle on their own.

Doesn't that cut into the God healing you thing? How does one rationalize that?
Also, do CS think we're all going to hell for having our legs set by a Dr?
Have you ever been to a CS nursing facility? There is one on running route and I always wonder what they do there. I have been to two. My mother recently died in one. They work through prayer and conventional nursing, without drugs or intervention. Sometime it works, sometimes not so much.
What are CS views on breastfeeding? As far as I know, there is no official stance. It's pretty much the same as regular people.

Doesn't that cut into the God healing you thing? How does one rationalize that? It does, but CS aren't as black and white as people believe them to be. If they're having a problem that seems to big for them, there is no shame in having a doctor's help. You can't use both methods at the same time, but no one will judge you for taking a different road.
Also, do CS think we're all going to hell for having our legs set by a Dr? CS don't believe in heaven or hell, so no
When did you stop being a CS and was there a reason?
At about sixteen. I went to a CS boarding school and wasn't impressed with some of the things that were said about people having sex before marriage, etc. To be fair, I was just a seriously rebellious kid, and even though I was still a virgin, I thought they were being a tad judgmental and I didn't like it. Then I swore at the headmistress and was booted before the end of the year.
After that, I moved out on my own and started having fun with booze and drugs. And although I wasn't doing the medical thing yet, I wasn't being a very good CS either and there were people I respected and loved who were devout CS, so I stopped being a CS myself. There's already a lot of negative press and I didn't feel like I should add to that.

Interesting! I did not know that. What do they think happens to those who don't believe after death? Do we still get the different state of being?
The same that happens to believers. Which is why CS don't proselytize. They believe strongly in Matthew 6:5-6 (And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.) Which may be why I find proselytizing to be kind of offensive. CS don't really care what you believe or don't, because the end result is the same. God is God, and he's not punishing people for what they think or do. Goodness is its own reward.
Also interesting, a CS will not pray for you unless you ask them to. They believe it's intrusive and harmful. They can pray for a situation to resolve harmoniously, but they won't pray that your cancer is healed unless you ask. Which is probably why I feel people praying for my eternal soul to be kind of offensive.
They're not bad at all, and I still love and respect many of them. They get a bad rap for the vaccine thing and the no doctors thing, but I know a shitload of CS and don't know anyone who let their kid die from lack of medical care. And I don't even know any friends of friends, etc. who have had that happen. I think people think that's more common than it is. Like in adoption, you only hear the Baby Richard stories and the ones about the kid who was adopted who killed his whole family. You rarely hear the good ones.
Where/why does it have the name Christian Scientist?
I had to Google this, because I couldn't think of a good way to say it. So here's what Wikipedia says: In the textbook (Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures), she (MBE) describes the teachings of Jesus as a complete and coherent divine science which was demonstrated and proven through his healings.
CS doesn't sound so bad. I believe in a lot of that too . . . but what is the official stance on vaccinations?
Therein lies the rub. I was never vaccinated for anything, as is the case with the majority of CS. Luckily, I have only ever had the chicken pox, and have been obscenely healthy for the majority of my life.
I'm actually still unvaccinated, because I have little to no clue what it's all about. Both of my children and the dog are vaxed on schedule for everything because I feel that it's important. It only recently occurred to me that I might need to get my own shots.

I think I have some CS family way back in my line.
If a child developed diabetes, and the family agreed to the life saving insulin, would they still pray for a recovery? Would there be regular trials to see if the kid had been cured? Would the child be supported if he wanted to end conventional treatment but the parents didn't?
I don't understand where the Christian part comes in. If you don't believe there is any difference in believers vs non-believers after death, what is the view on Jesus? Savior? Good teacher? Divine? Healer?
And the "scientist" part of the name has always thrown me since they seem so anti-science through the anti-man-made medicine. What are the views on other science-y things? Evolution?

They wouldn't pray for healing because they would be relying on medicine for that, but they could pray for a harmonious resolution. The child would be able to discuss with his parents whether or not he wanted to continue, but ultimately, it would be their decision as far as I know. If CS go the medical route, they go the medical route, so there would be check-ups and trials, etc.
