Just read in local news that two couples (brothers, their wives and children) were traveling home from Qatar and landed in Philadelphia and were detained. They were sent on a flight back.
They have lives here. They have green cards and now they are being sent away with nothing.
Has this story been posted yet? One of the people detained is a US Army interpreter. He literally risked his life for this country and this is how we repay him? I am so disgusted.
Mr. Darweesh worked as an interpreter for the Army’s 101st Airborne Division in Baghdad and Mosul starting shortly after the invasion of Iraq on April 1, 2003. The filing said he had been directly targeted twice for working with the United States military.
A husband and father of three, he arrived at Kennedy Airport on Friday evening with his family. Mr. Darweesh’s wife and children made it through passport control and customs, but agents of Customs and Border Protection stopped and detained him.
Brandon Friedman, who worked with Mr. Darweesh as an infantry lieutenant with the 101st Airborne, praised Mr. Darweesh’s work. “This is a guy that this country owes a debt of gratitude to,” Mr. Friedman said. “There are not many Americans who have done as much for this country as he has. He’s put himself on the line. He’s put his family on the line to help U.S. soldiers in combat, and it is astonishing to me that this country would suddenly not allow people like that in.”
Mr. Friedman, who is the chief executive of the McPherson Square Group, a communications firm in Washington, added, “We have a moral obligation to protect and repay these people who risked their lives for U.S. troops.”
He also said he feared for America’s military. “This not only endangers troops in the future, it endangers troops who are in combat now in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, wherever, “Mr. Friedman said. “If those interpreters and those fixers hear that the United States is not going to protect them, then they don’t have any incentive to work with U.S. troops, and there’s no way that we can operate without their support and assistance.”
Since the only government entity that 45 seems to care about is the military, I hope someone is working this angle with him.
This will make our service members less safe. 45, unsurprisingly, seems to have no idea how much our missions in places like Iraq and Afghanistan rely on citizens of those countries as translators and in other essential roles. These are extremely dangerous jobs, and these people are highly targeted. They do it because we allow them and their families to move to the US... or we did, until yesterday. If that promise is gone, so is their incentive to put their own lives on the line to help us.
(Not targeted at you directly. Just making a point. We are the frog in the pot here, and the water is getting warmer.)
Yeah it matters as my ILs are green card holders but not from the targeted countries. And I'm trying to gauge how freaked out we should personally be as a family. Freaked out as members of this nation? Already there.
I would be freaked out. I really think he could pitch a fit about Mexico not paying for the wall and do something similar.

Not to mention that there are green card holders from these countries on active duty status in our military right now! And the order didn't exempt them. So if they're currently overseas and given orders to return they actually can't.
This needs to be blared all over the place. The military angle is the kind of thing that may actually get some of the GOP in Congress to speak out against this.

I feel like this won't happen.
It probably won't, I know I am over reacting. It would also affect my family so that is why I freak out. Mexicans are really fed up with the whole wall and NAFTA deal. I have read several articles from Mexico about getting rid of it, that is all I see on Facebook right now. With Mexican elections next year I could see how Mexico could try to do something more drastic and then Trump would want to retaliate. It would affect the economy of both countries so I am sure it will not happen but sometimes it feels like all the things I kept thinking would never happening are happening so I am worried.

I understand. Prohibiting lawful Mexicans from traveling would be just so .... I don't know. We are in unchartered waters.
Where are the rest of our "representatives" in this? Why is no one official speaking out about this???
The only way that I find that even 1% acceptable is if they're working 24/7 on lining up all that they need to get him impeached ASAP. And, while I wish that was the case, I highly doubt that it is.

Blood on your hands...ALL of them.
Sen. Chris Murphy posted on Twitter/Facebook a picture of Aylan Kurdi and something like, "If they don't speak out about this EO, I don't want to ever hear my colleagues lecture me again about American moral leadership." Schumer also criticized it.
It will surprise you not at all that Paul Ryan's press secretary's comment was that it "was not a religious test and it is not a ban on people of any religion," rejecting the implication that the EO targeted Muslims. And Ryan himself on Friday said that "President Trump is right to make sure we are doing everything possible to know exactly who is entering our country. (Unless you are coming from the countries that have actually been associated with those who perpetrated terrorist attacks but aren't on this list, then...nevermind, I guess.)
Several Congressional aides also said that the EO didn't give preference to Christian refugees....even though that is precisely what Trump said it was supposed to do.
They aren't going to stand up to this at all. Whether it is because they themselves are prejudiced or because they are worried they will lose their seats in their heavily gerrymandered districts in the primary if they dare be seen as defending the Muslims.

I have seen a few press releases and tweets but nothing very strong. But it is a Saturday and not a Monday so hopefully there will be more of a reaction soon

I called both my Senators about this (one R, left a Vm; the other's a D, his mailbox was full, but he already stated his opposition to the EO on fb). I fb messaged my (R) Representative, his voicemail box was full. I'm posting about it in FB. What else can we do?

My Rep. Fb messaged me back and said green card holders are not affected, to which I responded with the ProPublica story that has the spokesperson saying that green card holders *are* affected.

I don't want to give the impression that I think the military is more important that all the other people affected by this. They're not more important. What I do think though is that talking about the negative effects on the military might be the one faint hope for getting Congress to grow a spine, since they love to talk about how we need to support the military.

Awesome that they don't know who is affected.
Right? I'm pissed that he can't be bothered to learn what is in the EO.

I'm trying to wait until I calm down so I can speak without screaming when I call my reps but this is a huge part of what kept me up all night. This will absolutely put my brother's life in more danger and I want to destroy all of these fake patriotic Christian assholes.
Right? I'm pissed that he can't be bothered to learn what is in the EO.
I wouldn't necessarily blame them. Literally no one knows what is going on. No one in DHS or State was consulted on the language and no one in CBP was briefed about what to do. Nor were the foreign immigration services who are now stuck enforcing it as well and the airline personnel who are forced to make decisions in an arbitrary fashion because they don't want to be responsible for carriage of the passengers back. No one was consulted and no one has been briefed. So I can't blame a congressperson for also being befuddled when we haven't even had a day to figure it out.
Fair enough. Even more reason for legislators to push back, though, I hope!
What happens when a president gives an EO and it's illegal and found to be illegal in court?
So I was thinking about this this morning. This has happened with some of Obama's EOs, I believe. In theory the way it works is that the court rules the EO unconstitutional/illegal and essentially stays or enjoins its enforcement. And then the executive, perhaps while making a statement of disagreement or seeking further judicial review, honors the court's decision because rule of law.
But there's a quote from Andrew Jackson when he was president about a decision by the Supreme Court: "Marshall made his decision; now let him enforce it." While courts have some mechanisms to enforce a decision -- contempt, sanctions -- if the President decides to basically say "screw you, you're wrong, I'm right, and I'm the president and I'll do what I want" .... I'm not sure what happens. Because that's what happens in countries with dictators and a lack of rule of law.
I believe individual writs of habeas corpus would be addressed to the warden of the facility holding a person, so I tend to think those are more likely to executed after the litigation plays out, since I tend to think that whatever career CBP/ICE/BOP guy who is the subject of the order is more likely (1) to be a normal person who respects judicial authority and (2) is less likely to want to end up hauled into court himself for contempt proceedings or some such.
Well this is terrifying. That decision you're referring to is, I think, the Indian Removal Act. Which was enforced despite a court ruling that the Cherokee were a sovereign nation.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I feel sick. This would have been my father if he was alive. A green card holder married to a citizen with citizen children. He traveled frequently oversees and was routinely strip searched because "it was suspicious".
I just want to hold all the families in fear tonight.

Mexico is going to have a reactionary election and elect a leftist. Probably AMLO. And then things are going to get interesting.
I think that is exactly where things are going. I have no idea how people forget this is the guy who said was the "legitimate president" for a while after the 2006 election.
I just want to give so many of you hugs and ears to listen. This whole thing is horrifying me, and I'm a white citizen married to a white citizen, with a decent income and all the privileges. My son-in-law is military so that scares me enough, but at least he's based on this side right now; my friend's husband is overseas for another 2 years (been gone for eight months already. I can't imagine.) To bugsandbibs and desertmoon and so many others I can't think of off the top of my head, OMFG is all I can think of to say.
I am horrified. And my heart is with those of you who may be or have been affected by this. All my reps at Dems, but I called and left messages this morning about this.

I'm in a college admissions counselor group on Facebook and one person had the idea to house students who are either in college or in boarding schools in the US who can't go home for spring break or summer vacation, but we're not sure how to get the ball rolling. One person said she told her daughter to contact the dean of students.
Does anyone know if that would be the right route? I know we've got a few people who work in higher ed here.

I think this is a fantastic idea!
My school had an International Student Affairs office. If your area schools have one, that might be a good place to start.
Wow all my Christian Iraqi family will be terrified now. They're all trump lovers so I hope Baghdad is nice this time of yr for them.feeling a but I told you so about it. This is awful for my cousin who came her at 3 and never got his citizen ship just a green card.he knows nothing about Iraq.
Fucking Bannon. This is his doing, I know it. He has SAID before that he loves chaos and wants to bring the country to ruin, so the more chaos and fear he can sow, the happier he is. And the orange puppet does whatever anyone tells him to because he has no values, no intelligence, no courage, and no empathy for anyone at all.
This is Americas doing. This is what the people voted for.
