CLEVELAND (KABC) -- A Cleveland mother was videotaped driving on the sidewalk while rushing her daughter to school.
Shena Hardin, 32, apparently was driving on the sidewalk to avoid waiting for a school bus that was picking up a handicapped child.
The bus driver said it wasn't the first time Hardin had done it. He decided to capture it on his cellphone to help police put a stop to it.
Hardin's mother explained her daughter's actions.
"This morning she was late. She was trying to get her daughter to school. The reason for going around and going to the side was to give that bus plenty of room," said Toni Hardin.
Shena Hardin was cited for not stopping for the school bus. The bus driver was credited by supervisors for his quick-thinking to nab the driver on camera.
Can I also just say that watching the video and seeing one of the kids on the bus broke my heart and made me so, so angry at this woman for the risk she's taking by doing this? Selfish hosebeast.
I told H yesterday that I want to throw things at the parents flying through the school zone (15 MPH) for my daughter's school on their way to drop off their kids. Hey, jerks, someone else's child could be hit by you driving like a fool. Slow down!

Holy shit that's disturbing. At K orientation the police said that some of the worst driving offenses they see in our town are at and around school pick up and drop off, that parents have tunnel vision and make sure their kids are safe then drive like maniacs. Sounds like this woman was worrying about her kid and forgetting that hers isn't the only one alive.
I love that the driver (a 32-year old grown ass woman)'s MOM responded to the reporter, that preshus was just running late and had to get grandpreshus to school. Give me a break.

I absolutely believe this. Have you ever gotten stuck behind a bus? It can be infuriating, especially when it seems to stop on every single block. Then there are neighborhoods like mine, which have a ridiculously large number of kids. I call the bus that comes from the local high school a clown car - kids just keep streaming off and streaming off and streaming off at every stop. I've said to my husband more than once that there cannot possibly be enough seats on the bus to accommodate all the kids who get off.
As much as I hate the way this woman chose to deal with a situation that she found frustrating, I do understand that frustration. If I can help it, I will at all costs avoid driving anywhere between 7:30 and 8, and 3:15 and 4.
My MIL received a $600 fine for going around a school bus. When the family found out we were all like :-| and then :@ The bad part was that she just tried to play dumb. It's shit like this that solidifies for me that DD will never be left in her care.
I could better understand someone just blowing past the school bus because they were in a hurry and distracted. But to go to the trouble of driving past the bus on the sidewalk shows that she CONSCIOUSLY made the decision that her needs were more important than the safety of the kids getting on the bus. That's not just a distracted mom, that a very selfish "me-firster."
I hate the distracted driving bit too - a distracted driver here mowed down an 11 year old last year. It was awful. Bus was stopped, kid was crossing, and this driver came out of nowhere and hit the kid at 35 or 40 mph. The bus driver was laying on his horn and all the lights were on.
Fortunately the kid made it, with some broken bones and other injuries.
I always report this sort of thing. Pisses me off to no end.
Me too!
I was driving down the street in my neighborhood (speed limit 25) which one of the elementary schools is on. Some azzhole teen was speeding and pulled up behind me (I was going 25), slamming on her breaks to avoid rear ending me, and then passes me to speed off (going at least 40)- right in front of the elementary school. I wrote her plate down and called the cops. I was pissed.

Yesterday I stopped in a left turn lane right as it turned red. The asshole behind me decided that he didn't want to sit and wait for the green arrow and decided to GO AROUND ME to turn left, cutting off traffic and nearly causing two accidents. I was LIVID that he got away with it.
:-| And from the speed at which she did that, you know that's not the first time she's practiced that maneuver. I hope to anything holy that she gets the maximum penalties for her behavior.
I live by two schools, and go through the school zones every morning. People seem to abide by the rules, which warms my cockles. Of course, they're also patrolled pretty heavily.

Add me to the group that gets so annoyed by this.
The other day in my neighborhood (very suburban/residential), I was in a line of cars waiting for a school bus that was traveling in the opposite direction and was stopped to pick up kids. One lady decides she doesn't want to wait and flies around all of us and nearly hits the school bus head on. Hey, Sherlock, see that big yellow thing? That's why we're all stopped here. I really think it's what the PP said: she had tunnel vision and was just trying to get around the stopped cars without checking to see why we're stopped.

B's new school is on a really main street. The city PD and transportation department say there's no money for those flashy crosswalks, there are no crossing guards (that exist at other schools), even the signs that tell people not to park in front of the school during drop off and pick up say the wrong times (the building was last used as a high school).
People haul down that street, and we can't even get a cop to sit there for a half hour, morning and afternoon, to intimidate them into slowing down to the actual speed limit (35), never mind the school zone speed limit (20). There are signs (regular speed limit signs, a block back from the school, literally in the trees) that say that the speed limit is reduced to 20 "when children are present".
...the PTA have decided on some self-help. We're drafting volunteers to stand in the middle of the street with big signs telling people to slow their azzes down. It's completely crazy, but what else can you do?
She has done it since Feb of last year!?! What the story doesn't say, that I heard on the radio, the bus driver contacted the police and they were sitting there waiting for her. Good work bus diver.
The kids school is on a busy street but do not run buses. They have a teacher assigned to stand on the street to get descriptions of anyone driving crazy. The eighth graders are assigned as crosswalk guards, they are on either end of the block and right in front of the school, in saftey orange, and I still see stupid drivers every.damn.morning. Our streets are on a grid, go one block over assholes!

2ish years ago the city citizens voted in a substantial tax increase, part of which went to increasing our police dept. At the time, and probably still is, the move was unprecedented for this economy. I'm very proud to live where I do.
Back in VA, there was a large apartment complex next door to our street, on a residential road. You had to pass it to get out to the main road. If I timed it wrong on my way to work, I was stuck behind this bus for TWENTY MINUTES because there were so many children in the complex and it took forever to load. It was so incredibly frustrating, and I called the county twice to complain about how the bus driver didn't just pull into the complex (like the bus driver on the other route did).
But although I cursed and screamed in frustration, it never, ever would have occurred to me to just go around the bus, short of some actual life threatening emergency. What is wrong with people??

The school bus I took in HS was so packed we had to sit 3 and 4 to a seat. Which couldn't possibly have been safe, but would totally give you the clown car sense.
