What the fuck. Something similar happened in NYC a few months ago, too. WHAT. THE. FUCK.
Anecdotally - I once had a guy looking through my window, which I found right after I had gotten out of the shower. (Ranch style house, so all ground level.) I called a friend and literally the first thing he did when he got in the house was grab a knife from the kitchen just to probably make himself feel safe. If I wasn't a moron and called the cops immediately (I didn't), I'm 100% certain he would have still had the knife in his hand when they showed up. OF COURSE SHE HAD A KNIFE ON HER, SHE CALLED THE POLICE TO REPORT SOMEONE BREAKING IN TO HER HOME.
They probably didn't even pay attention to what they were responding to - they just saw it was from her apartment and assumed because of her history, she was a danger to others. This is disgusting.
If she were released from jail a week ago, they should have known she had mental health issues. Also, if she had a knife, why didn't they use a taser instead of resorting to shooting her immediately? It's not like she had a gun. If she was reporting a burglary, maybe she just had the knife because she was scared and trying to protect her kids.
I know that these are all pointless thoughts on my part, because clearly the system does not care.

Sickening. Those poor babies. Their mother was murdered. No doubt if that was a white person with a knife, he/she would still be alive and kicking. Hell, a white man has to fucking TRY to get shot by cops, but POC just have to exist.
Two trained police officers SHOT a petite woman because she showed a knife? I hope justice is done but I am not hopeful.
A petite woman with a history of mental illness. Well documented, as established by the "note" on her file necessitating two officers to head there.
They knew exactly what they were doing. They felt it was best to just "take care of the problem" instead of making sure she was 1) safe and 2) getting the help she needed. Murderers.

"But they were aaaafrrraaaiiidddd". Because obviously the only thing to do to a black woman holding a knife is to shoot her immediately.
America is just so broken. Absolutely broken. These officers will not have to answer for anything just like Philando Castile case. It's disgusting and demoralizing. Doesn't matter if they're following the cop's demands or not.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham
1. This is an example of why mandating mental health training is so important. It was really fucked up. That poor girl and her children.
2. The police need advanced training on Non lethal alternatives for situations such as this. Police are told " you shoot to kill." No. Fuck no as there are alternatives which should have been used.
3. I also think every police department should have access to crisis workers who can help diffuse the issue.
This is all over my FB page right now. The Seattle PD has a HUGE problem with shoot first racist behavior - there was some sort of investigation recently that basically said they use excessive force and biased tactics, and there was supposed to be some re-training, but I don't know how much of that has actually happened.
The King County Sheriff's department isn't better. They killed Renee Davis, a member of the Muckleshoot tribe and who was also pregnant, under similar circumstances back in October when they were there for a welfare check.
I read one article that says there might be video, because there were security cameras in the hallway of the apartment building, but given the outcomes of other police shootings I don't think even if the entire thing was capture that it will help get justice for Charleena Lyles.

These were my first thoughts as well. Awful, tragic and infuriating. I have no hope that the officers will be found guilty, let alone even charged with murder.
This happened in low-income housing surrounded by several of Seattle's most affluent neighborhoods. There's a lot of NIMBY behavior around here and most reports I've seen have been quick to dismiss this poor woman (and her children!!) because of her troubled past. It's horrifying.
The local public radio just published this article about Seattle's "white liberal racism." The schools mentioned are in the same-- or similar-- neighborhoods I mentioned above.

Outrageous. Of course this would not have happened had the woman been white.
Those poor children! What the fuck? I just really don't know what to say, I guess. It is heartbreaking and also rage inducing.
There is a picture a Facebook friend shared of a white guy with his hand on his gun, being talked to by white officers. It was at a Confederate rally in Stone Mountain, and the cop is just talking to the guy, but the guy HAD HIS HAND ON HIS GUN. Why is he alive??? Yet this woman who thought she was being robbed had a knife? And BOTH officers fired on her?
