Andwhat acted a damned fool the last time we had this discussion. I imagine that's how she got dragged with a quickness this time.
Secondly, it's odd of black folks to jump on Jewish women for feeling some type of way about educating folks on not buying into bigotry. If we shouldn't have to educate and explain delicately, neither should they.
Third, the word apartheid has a specific meaning. What is happening in Palestine is shameful, oppressive, and discriminatory. But it's not apartheid. Stop using that word like that.
And finally, my eyes cannot roll hard enough at the Becky conversation even if some of you aren't that serious. The majority of standard non Aiden/Jayden/caiden American names are old testament/ bible names, aka Jewish names. Mary and John are Jewish names ffs. And Becky was a pretty common suburban white girl name in the early 90s. Sir Mix A Lot was smack talking shiksas, I promise
There is a tag function if you have something to say about me.
I was really just going to read this thread to see what was discussed and not even contribute but since I am being dragged into it...
I have to LOL that something I was taught and took at face value I was supposed to question, but people who were taught that Palestinians did math problems about the killing of Jews don't. So I was taught that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was based on religion. I had no reason to question that and a quick Google search has articles from The Guardian, jpost, Haaretz, and a ton of other sites discussing this conflict as not just a geopolitical war, but a holy (religious) one. So Catholic school taught me this conflict was religious, the Jewish population in my area is less than 1% now and it was even less when I was in school, and it isn't a topic I had a vested interest in so I never went and researched it further. But yes, I was showing my ass.
And then I am supposed to believe what some internet strangers have to say on the subject when clearly their own opinions are biased and there were other posters, namely fryjack2, who posted a view that was a complete 180 from that of the Jewish posters. You felt I was showing my ass because I still questioned strangers (you). Um, that is just being smart. And even after the tensions died down some and I went to go try to find further information, I was still told all those sources were biased. Funny to me because they were saying things just like fryjack has mentioned and are mentioned in that UN report.
I would just like to defend my "math problem" thing and point out that I did question it and that if my children are ever taught that sort of blatant bullshit and un-nuance version of Zionism, there will be an angry march down to their school and hell will be raised.
I wish I had something more intelligent to add. Since we're at the "you stupid Jew" portion of this discussion, I'll just say, thank you to my fellow Jewish women on this board for continuing to help the non-Jews around here listen and learn, and say thanks to our allies for being able to speak intelligently on this issue.
So does anyone think we can re-rail this discussion for the 2nd time?
This post is still bothering me. I don't know the history with whereswaldo. She posted one comment in a 4 page thread that's attempting a legit discussion and your response is the above?
Maybe I'm taking it too personally, but it reads super dismissive of anything I posted of Palestinian's experience. and encourages all the non Jews to listen and learn to just Jews.
Maybe people should be listening and learning from Palestinians too. We aren't all violent antisemits. But comments like your's don't help people like me (not that there are any here) participate in these threads.

My comment had nothing to do with you. I'm sorry that it was taken as directed to you and it likely should have been left out as it did nothing to further this discussion in a helpful manner.
I do think the experience of Palestinians is important. I've said as much. I'm not accusing you of being or any other Palestinian of being a violent anti-Semite. I still want to know more about the Palestinian experience and I'm very curious about how such actions against Palestinians are put in to practice. Since your initial post, I have been researching how Israel codifies these actions, why they're put in to practice and continue to be enforced, what Israelis really think about the situation in their own country vs how we in the U.S. interpret their position, what my position is as a Jew and supporter of Israel and how I can reconcile my position with the stories and experiences of Palestinians.
This is a subject that is steeped in emotion and that is to be expected. I'm trying, at this point and since your comment, to remove my emotional component and reaction to really understand the other side of the coin, so to speak.

Im editing your post just to include the relevant parts.
Im not sure you notice that you conteadict yourself here. I agree with your first part, but then your second part basically negates it. Mary and John are not typical Jewish names. Rebecca certainly is - as is Sarah, Deborah, Abigail, David, Jacob, Isaac, Abraham... im not sure why you feel its ok to dismiss what some of the Jewish posters have said they feel when they here the name "becky" used to describe the typical, ignorant white woman. This may not be the most important part of this conversation, but its certainly an example of how sometimes antisemitic microagressions are just blown over and ignored.

I agree with all of what you're saying.
I think the feeling I got when I came back to the thread was "you're Jewish, you're automatically biased, you couldn't possibly see if from any other side and therefore you are wrong." Except some of us fight so hard against that bias. Some of us are sick that we, the Jews, who have been oppressed for THOUSANDS of years, have turned around and become oppressors. But at the same time, we support the existence of the state of Israel. And not all Palestinians are blameless. Some really do hate us and want us dead. The rockets shot out of Gaza are real. Hamas really does have the destruction of Israel in its charter. I personally was in a suicide bombing as a child in Jerusalem. THAT WAS REAL. And often that gets brushed aside and only Israel's faults get pointed out, and that's when it starts to feel like anti-Semitism.
I think Netanyahu is a fucking disaster. Abbas is the best partner for peace we have ever had and Bibi threw it in his face and it's disgusting. Israeli policies need to change. And the condition of the lives of Palestinians, especially in the Occupied Territories/Palestine (I don't want to offend with either term) is unacceptable. The settlers should be forced to move back to '67 borders (or borders that are agreed upon with commensurate land swaps) or live under Palestinian law. And Palestinians whose land was taken by the settlers must be compensated appropriately (and of course given their land back). This is all true (in my opinion).
But Israel is not the only bad actor here. Going back to the time of Arafat, he compensated the families of suicide bombers. Abbas has put a stop to that practice, but Hamas is all about it. And while we talk about negotiations with Abbas and the West Bank, what about what's happening in Gaza?
Won't Jared Kushner just save us all??
Full disclaimer: my brother was a soldier in the Israeli Navy for 3 years. He patrolled off the coast of Gaza. He's home now and, while his work was considered intelligence and is classified, I have surmised he saw some really awful things, on both sides. Including the slaughter of some of his informants. He has some PTSD and other issues associated with his service. I don't feel like I should discuss Israel without mentioning his involvement.

And that "stereotypical suburban white girl" that was so common in the early 90s tended to be a caricature of someone from Long Island/New Jersey and always smacked of a "JAP" - Jewish American Princess - to me (excuse my language).
ETA: and when my parents call me "Becky" now, I cringe even more, not just because I hate the name, but because I'm aware of how it's used in other contexts and know what it means to some people

Becky is a blonde valley girl. Cue orange county, ca tears.

Of course I've seen the video. I was alive in the 90s. And let me tell you, AS A JEW growing up in that time, to me, that girl was a Jappy Jewish girl from Long Island. And I was not alone in that perception.

It's ok, we can be dismissed. Antisemitism is totally cool. It doesnt really matter what we think.
And there are definitely no Jews in Soutern California. None. Not one.
And re: anti-Semitism, I truly understand that it is difficult for non Jews to see that it still exists in everyday life. ESPECIALLY for POC who experience such blatant and systemic racism as a matter of course. For such a long time now, Jews have seemed to "pass" - we seem to have been accepted. Jewish actors win Oscars, and it's NBD. They rise to high positions in prestigious firms (many of which were started by Jews, btw, because we couldn't get hired by the other ones). We have no problem getting into medical school, colleges, etc. We aren't segregated into neighborhoods and given lower quality education as a matter of government policy. And as I said in the Ashkenazi Jews as POC thread, I will never be stopped for "driving while Jewish."
And I loathe playing the Oppression Olympics. Nobody wins except White Christian Males. So this isn't a comparison of who has it worse off.
Anti-Semitism has gone underground. No longer will we be told that we can't buy an apartment because the building has enough Jews (like my dad was in the 70s). There aren't official Jew quotas at Ivy League universities anymore. And we aren't being rounded up into ghettos. But it's become a part of the culture. When someone says they want a "Jew lawyer" because we're better at negotiating - what they mean is that they think we're wiley and slimey and amoral and will do whatever it takes. When they say (like Donald Trump has) that they only want "a guy with a yarmulke taking care of my money" - they mean it's because they believe the age old stereotypes about Jews being moneygrubbing crooks who will do anything to make more of it. WHEN THEY USE THE JEWISH NAME "BECKY" and a young Jewish girl perceives that it is talking about her and her friends being the ignorant white suburban girl, that means something. Because as I believe has been discussed about microagressions many times, intent does not matter.
And when anti-Semitism becomes more acceptable on the intellectual left, as it has recently, particularly in Europe, it is unnerving. Sometimes it's cloaked in anti-Zionism as has been discussed, and sometimes it's a disdain for "Talmudism," among other things. But it's there and being discussed AS IF IT WERE A VALID OPINION TO HOLD.
Then there are the frequent bomb threats against the schools, JCCs, and synagogues. Those are more obvious signs of anti-Semitism. And it doesn't take too many clicks around that oh so special Internet to realize that there are some straight up white supremacist anti-Semites out there. But those people I can deal with. Those people I recognize. I see them.

We really can't have anything, can we?
Nevermind that there are black girls named Becky.
Beckys are basic white girls, full stop and since Jewish is broadly defined some of them can be Jewish. But that doesn't make it a Jewish characterization.
Also, who is the the damned fool who assumes a girl named Becky is a Becky?

Look, I'm not automatically assuming that because my parents call me Becky, I'm a Becky. But it's jarring to read about "Beckiness" when that's your name. It just is. What if I called all antisemites "imnotstayings?" Wouldn't you get a little thrown off every time I said it even though you knew I wasn't referring to you specifically. I get that it was INTENDED to be Jewish (probably - I'm not here to call Sir Mix A lot an anti-Semite) but Rebecca is a very common Jewish name. It just is. Fact.
Keep on keeping on with it if you want, we're just telling you how it is perceived by some of us.

I didn't say only Jews could use the name. Names go across races and cultures of course. But it is a very common Jewish name. It's a ridiculous argument to make that "there are XYZ Rebecca's too." Of course their are. Like fryjack2 said, she's a Palestinian with the name of an 80 year old Jewish bubbie.
And like I also said, do as you wish. I said my part. You know how some of us feel. You want to pile on to a small aspect of a much larger and more important conversation, go ahead. You want to keep calling people Becky's, go ahead.

FFS. I'm another Rebecca. I've never seen the use of Becky to be an antisemitic micro aggression or associated it with JAP stereotypes and I really don't think this is a fight we need to pick. That Becky is a shiksa y'all.
But I picked my screen name because of another famous Rebecca reference that predates Sir Mix a Lot, and she was straight up evil so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you grew up how and where I grew up, it might make more sense. But again, it's a small part of a much larger discussion. And while we're being sensitive, shiksa is a derogatory term - the actual yiddish translation is "detested thing" - which I don't think is common knowledge
Yes, please don't use the word "shiksa". It comes from the Hebrew word shekets and means "abomination", "impure", "object of loathing." It's intended as a derogatory term against non-Jewish women. It's definitely frowned up to use in my Jewish community.
So I'm supposed to come up with a new name for a phenomenon because some white Jewish girls see themselves in the stereotype of a basic bitch?
Go fuck yourself.
Maybe you are a basic bitch.
You realize this is the height of hypocrisy right? The stereotype is about someone who claims to be inclusive and liberal but really is close minded and only cares about herself.
I mean, whatever, KOKO, but you're not exactly "listening and learning" here.
(And a side note: Mary and John are NOT Jewish names. Mary is decidedly a New Testament name. Jonathan/Yonatan is a Jewish name, but Jews tend to go by Jack, not John.)
I've usually been impressed with the way delicate conversations on Israel have gone on this board but this is getting ugly. I think I need a board break.
ETA: I don't care THIS much if people continue to use the term. I really don't. But I appreciate that this has became a thoughtful discussion about Jewish privilege (the whole "Jewish American Princess" stereotype), and how people react to it.
What I'm reacting to is the dismissiveness, the doubling down, the lack of self-awareness and the cursing people out/temper tantrum.

What just happened? Becky is a microagression No it's not cites Sir Mix A Lot Israel is an apartheid state cites article authored by U.N. scholars aka fake news. But one of the authors studied South African apartheid? Please provide nonanececdotal info. But that study was biased cause it was commissioned by 12 Arab countries.
