Any recommendations for a good work bag ? I can't seem to find one that isn't to big but will hold a teacher manual or 2 when I need to bring it home .

I also use a Vera Bradley tote, and it's the perfect size for me. I can carry what I need back and forth (a manual, a stack of papers, a random assortment of pens, paper clips, and sticky notes, my water bottle) but it isn't so huge that it becomes a bottomless pit easily. Mine is a solid navy blue, and I think they had solid black and solid bright pink, so you don't have to do a pattern if that's not your style.
I have a Vera too. I have tried other brands, but this particular tote also has 6 tall pockets inside that can hold my water, coffee, pencil bag, etc. Makes my packing and carrying things in easier!
I actually use my old diaper bag (my kid is 7!). My friends gave me gorgeous Kate Spade diaper bag and after moving out of that baby stage, the bag just sat in my closet. I love using it because it has outer pockets for my drink cups, space for my lunch as well as papers/work that I carry to & from school, and it's cute
I have used a Vera Bradley tote for the past few years. Still love it, but I swapped to my old Jansport backpack when pregnant. This year I have a rolling cart, since I'm in three different rooms and have 4 preps. Current plan is to leave rolling cart at school and only bring home the tote nightly. But it was convenient to have my lunch bag fit in the backpack.
I got a big bag from Target like 5 years ago that held up really well until my 3 year old started using it this summer to go to "work" so I will be getting a new one...probably from Target.
I've used various leather totes for years. My favorite was from J Crew, but it was lost in a move, so now I'm using a Rebecca Minkoff I bought on sale.
I also am not a fan of the VB patterns, but I used one of those bags for years. It fit papers, a lesson planning book, and my work laptop with room leftover for wallet, keys, phone, water bottle, etc. It started looking dingy after a few years, and last year for Christmas, I got this bag:
