I have friends who live on st thomas and this AMs predictions are lookong like they will get a direct hit from the eye. They have been thru many hurricanes but this is the first one they are truly scared about.
One thing my DH learned from Sandy was that in addition to having cash on hand in case ATMs don't work, also try to get the cash changed over to smaller bills. So many places around us were unable to get smaller bills to give change to customers. We have a stack of $5's and $10's in the safe for emergencies.
Ugh that front isn't going to show up in time to spare the U.S. mainland or Caribbean nations. Some models are showing it being pushed out at GA and following the coastline for a while. That would be horrific, even with expected weakening.
My entire extended family lives in PR aside from one cousin. I'm actually a little relieved that my remaining grandparents died this year, because of this storm hits the island, they would not likely survive given the conditions of the places they lived.

How much cash do you suggest having on hand?
He's a worrywort so I know he has $500 total. We live in an area that was beat up pretty badly so we're not taking any chances. We were lucky last time that our condo building wasn't affected too much, but a mile down the road and homes washed away.
I'm trying so hard not to freak out about Irma. I can't even think about it enough to actually prepare without getting close to an anxiety attack.
I'm in central VA. Several models have it affecting our area. My due date is Tuesday, but there have been no signs of labor. I've been scheduled for an induction on the 10th, right around when it's projected to hit the east coast (if it does). I'm about 25 minutes from the hospital where I'm delivering. There are so many variables. Ugh. I'm an anxious wreck.
Hugs. Odds are even if we lose power (I'm in central va, too- hi neighbor!) the hospitals will still have working generators through all of it. In past storms we did fine. And flooding is less of a concern with all of our elevation changes. I know it's stressful, though.
I keep telling myself the same things. The newest tracks seem less likely to impact our area, but the possibility is still there. Just focusing on getting this baby out safely, and surviving work until I do.
I am supposed to go speak at an event near Jacksonville and near the coast middle of next week. Attendees and speakers all are traveling in.
I do not want to fly down given these tracks if they stay this way. Even if the area is only on the outer bands I would assume it would mess up travel. And I am envisioning a scenario where it is still like a category 1 or 2 when it reaches Jacksonville and I end up stranded in and hotel with no supplies for days.
I guess I will be writing an email tomorrow delicately asking if they might be thinking of postponing.

For what it's worth, most places in Florida probably won't cancel anything until about 1-2 days out. I'm on the east coast waiting to see if it's best to stay here or evacuate to the west coast. I love our town but I hate the unknown of hurricanes. I'm glad, however, to see so much of my town taking this seriously.

I always tried to have $500. But do what you can. I planned on $500 because of having to buy food, gas, water, etc.
Eastern NC is already sold out of generators. My ex husband was trying to buy one today and had our daughter out looking. Y'all please be safe. I'm hoping she turns and goes back out to sea.
This makes me so nervous. I told my husband we need to prepare. With sandy we had no power for 10 days and lived in the mall after work. But now we have a toddler and that won't work.
We are in SFL. People here are taking this seriously. We went to 5 different stores between yesterday and today and every one was out of water. I ordered a light water filtration system on Amazon just in case. We're well stocked and have a generator, $500 cash on hand, and I will fill zip loc baggies with water and stash them in the fridge tomorrow.
What I am really scared of is if our area is hit, my H will have to leave to another area for storm duty. He is the planner/prepper and will be a nervous wreck to leave us alone.

We just arrived at Disney today from WI. We are scheduled to go home Sunday but idk. Looking like I'm going to be working on getting us out of here early or booking more time here.

My thoughts are going out to everyone in it's path. Right now weatherbug makes it look like the eye is going to slip in between Cuba and South FL. I hope that doesn't mean it's going to reach TX. That's the nightmare scenario right now. I really hope it turns northward, best case it goes out to sea.

this is so bad...I hate that there is so much uncertainty & FL looks to be impacted in some way. I also really feel for the small Caribbean islands- limited means to evacuate, not much extra money to buy supplies, and a general bad situation all around.
