It's funny. I actually didn't start watching HGTV regularly until I had my DD and was on ML and home all day. And we had just bought our first house 5 months earlier. I guess it was a good thing I didn't see HGTV first. I probably would have been a lot pickier and indecisive in our house search. We only looked at two houses before we put an offer on our house. I love our house and it has most of what we want. Watching way too much HGTV during my maternity leave did cause me to want to redo our living room.
I had my HGTV kick for a while, but after a while it got old and every show is basically the same.
I know people like to dog on open concept, but I do like having the kitchen not separated from the living space. It works better for entertaining people.
I don't exactly live in a hot market for flipping. There are three I can think of that were done in an adjacent neighborhood but they make sense there. Very old, large houses in a high end neighborhood and at least one of the flips was done meticulously. Don't know if I'd touch the other one. So I don't know if it's driving us into another housing bubble here.
Someone mentioned their MIL wanting to update her kitchen before selling. We considered a house that was well under market value in the high end neighborhood but didn't bit because they'd just done a kitchen reno that wasn't to our tastes and I couldn't bear the guilt of ripping it out.
I also love Sarah Richardson and Candace something or other - can't remember her last name. I don't think we have HGTV right now but it's not usually something I care to watch because it's all the same (and I'm totally a Becky with my white/gray color scheme) and so poorly done.
This Old House episodes where they'd meticulously repair/scrape the old paint off old moulding - those shows I could watch forever as it's real craftsmanship.
I used to hate on open concept houses, until I bought one. I’ve had both, and I actually love having the open plan. I have other, more closed off spaces though so maybe that’s why I like it so much. I still draw the line at two-story spaces. I have my limits.
I loved open concept until I had one. lol
I felt like there was a sound issue with open concept, and I disliked having my kitchen (and my mess I make creative genius while cooking) on display. My kitchen is living room adjacent, so close enough to not feel too far from the action, but it is still visually separate and has a pocket door that I can close if I really want it to be separate. On the other hand, it has one and a third walls of windows, so it always feels like it is part of what is going on outside...just without sound.
I will say that I would've gladly bought a well-done flipped house. My #1 choice was a flip but my H convinced me to go with my #2 choice because of location. I don't regret that at all because our house is so conveniently located. but man, when i look at our suuuuuper outdated bathroom I kind of wish I would've fought harder for the flip.

The house down the street from us was flipped. They were slowed down because they had to actually get permits for what they were doing to the house (muah ha ha!), so it ended up on the market too late and it's just sitting there.

We bought a flip because we know we're lazy and not handy.
In the fun lane blog I think. Didn’t realize she was run off the board though.
Yes, it was holly! I thought she said something kind of insensitive and people criticized her for it. She didn't take it well and left; it wasn't like people really attacked her. But I could be remembering wrong; who can keep track on ML anymore?

I love our open floor plan. Our first house had a closed off kitchen and I hated it. Our current house has an open floor plan and it works so much better for our life.
I clean as I cook so the mess issue isn’t a problem 90% or the time though I have just piled everything in the dishwasher once or twice until I could properly load it.
Also with DD’s Asd the fewer walls the easier it is to keep her out of trouble. It’s just been the last 6 months that we have been able to let her play in the house without supervision. Having it open made it easier to cook and watch over her.
My house is a pre-2008 flip. Not particularly well-done; I see lots of places where it looks like the contractor said, "Fuck it, that's close enough." It's an old house with high ceilings and big windows in the location I wanted, so I'm fine with that. I do wish there was one space downstairs that was NOT open concept. I don't really love having my kids and their shenanigans in my face all the time.
I looked our house up on the city assessor's site a while back and saw that it went for $50K more in 2006 than we paid in 2015. I have to admit that I'd been seeing housing prices skyrocket in our area and thinking, well now our house is worth X. It's good to have the reminder that this is only speculation - a price isn't really real until someone is willing to sign on the dotted line for it.

She posted what stellas called a "professional" pic in the BOTD. It was one she had used in her blog, so it was more "arty" than the usual snaps posted but stellas was being ridiculous/weird (I know you're all shocked). Most defended Holly but I think she just didn't want to deal. She came back later briefly and that's when she said something (can't remember what for the life of me) that rankled a few posters who went in on her, so she left a second time.

I watch some shows here and there because I like to get ideas, but I agree that I hate that every house seems like it gets reno'd and decorated to be the same. I'm glad that I love my house and don't plan on selling anytime soon, because if everyone's standards for a good house include greige walls with white trim and open floor plans, I'd be up a creek with my old Victorian with all natural wood and actual rooms.
I will say, the HGTV and Pinterest crazes have made it hard to decorate. I feel like most stores cater to this specific style right now and frankly, most of it looks ridiculous in my house. I have a lot of empty space and have since I bought my house 5+ years ago, while I try to buy things that I really like and look decent in a non-trendy space. It's harder than it should be, IMO.

I love House Hunters, my favorite are the international ones. I really just love looking at real estate and prices. I know a handful of people who were on the show and it's funny to hear their side verus what they show.
I HATE the flip or flop people. Christina is the most fake person ever and her chunky eye lashes gross me out.
I answered a casting call to be on one of their new shows recently. I got an email back asking me to let them know ASAP when we were under contract for a house. It has been 3 years of looking and we still haven't found a house so I doubt we will be under contract for anything anytime soon.

Oh really? A reno based one? A Boston area show could be fun. I hate it when HH is in the Boston area but only 1 house is in the right town. Like why would a family who wants Winchester look in Wilmington?? So dumb.
A house in my inlaws neighborhood is being flipped and I completely blame HGTV for what the people are doing to it. It's classic Fixer Upper copycat from the outside - they painted the brick outside white and they clearly didn't know what they were doing because it looks awful. My inlaws have had multiple neighbors and the mailman stop by to chat and mention how horrible the house looks.
My first thought when I heard they were ending the show was there must be some type of scandal coming up. Joanna has ended successful endeavors previously, though, so it's not surprising for them.

My first thought was concern about their fundamentalist church and HGTV not wanting to associate themselves with anti-gay groups.

it was something about infertility.
Infertility and weight. Something about how if you needed to gain or lose weight to get pregnant and didn’t do it you had no room to complain about not getting pregnant, or you didn’t want it as much because you weren’t willing to work for it, or something similar.
Look at me remembering stuff!! Why is this info taking up precious space in my head?

Sometimes I play their marathons in the background while I do other things and I really just like seeing the before/after or guessing which house they will pick. It think people like repetition, like how your kids wants to watch the same Disney movie on repeat.
Do people really feel pressure to "keep up with the Joneses" or feel depressed/ inadequate with their lives and homes after watching these shows? I put pressure on myself about how my home looks but I'm in the design/construction industry. Even the most amazing designers I know say not to judge them by their house because it's never up to their own standards (we don't make enough for our great taste, lol).

This is a pretty good guess. I was thinking some type of lawsuit with the former partners coming up or there's a photo out there with them and someone unlikable like Trump.

My chief complaint with chip & Joanna is trying to make Waco seem great. Waco sucks and is ridiculous, gtfo. I don't even watch the show but so many people I know were all, "omg I need to move to Waco!" 😒
Hgtv is mindless to me and doesn't make me feel inadequate or want to move. The minute anything remotely annoying happens in my house is what makes me want to move. I wish my h would just listen to me every time we move lol. I want a zero maintenance townhome or something without a basement to be afraid of. YET HERE WE ARE, AGAIN. The longest I've ever lived anywhere in my life is like 3 years, so I'm pretty nomadic and get restless, even though I insist I hate moving.
I think I'll be surprised (but not shocked!) if there's anything nefarious going on. Joanna seems pretty business savvy and I think they are probably plenty busy with their other ventures. Those probably make more money long term now that their names are out there.
I think they've found other ways to make alt of money that don't take the same time and effort as the show. Though who knows how long that interest will stay high without new episodes of the show.
That said, they did get a lot of shit from conservative folks for their new Target collaboration so maybe they do want to pull back either for family concerns or church concerns.

Also, HGTV will run re-runs of their show for years to come. They'll still get plenty of money out of the show. I mean, does anyone "actually" care if its a new episode or not? They're all the same - greige paint, shiplap, cute moments with the kids, Chip is goofy but Joanna still adores him, big reveal after Joanna spent all night decorating - I don't care if its an episode from 2017 or 2014. For me that particular HGTV show is just kind of a mindless pleasure - it doesn't even have the predictable drama of Love it or List It (omg, there is a major structural issue with the house which means Hillary cant do everything they asked!!!!) - which is fine.
But I think as long as reruns are airing they will still get plenty of publicity from HGTV.
