DH is a federal LEO and will be facing mandatory retirement. That SS change will be huge for our retirement plans. What a mess this will be for a huge number of people.
So they want me to pay more for the benefits I get, get less benefits overall, and get no COLA which means my pay won't keep up with inflation? Super! I'm so tired of my livelihood being used over and over for political "games." I'm a real person too, who works hard as it extremely good at my job, damnit!! I don't want to have to shoulder the tax reform for the country and honestly I can't afford to. 😥

I was telling my mom yesterday that if even some of this passes we will all have to move in together. H and I are both Feds and my mom and dad are retired Feds.
I realize this most likely won't come to fruition, but let's say it does. Would it have any impact on recent retirees - specifically the COLAs?
Yes, it would apply to all FERS employees, current retirees included. That is the worst part of the proposed cuts, IMO, because people decided when to retire based on the benefits they were promised, and may not have the option to get back into the workforce now.

I totally get it! I'm single and in a HCOL area and I'm struggling the way it is.
Call those assholes in congress. Denver has a huge population of federal employees. I think DH said it was the largest outside of the D.C. area, but that might be fake news.
So, the budget was passed already? And now they're trying to figure out where to get the funds from? What other options are there if it has already passed? This is incredibly upsetting.
Also, in regards to Ryan getting what he wants - now that a lot of his shit is becoming reality, what do you see as the R reactions? I'm talking CHIP not being funded, The impact of lifelong Rs in the Feds getting screwed, and allllllll the other things that will really hit them hard. Do you think they'll FINALLY see that all they've been hooting and hollering for is really a horrid idea?

No the budget has not passed. The House passed this reconciliation bill. It will not pass the Senate in this form. But it did pass with them just saying we want to cut so much from the budget and we will figure out exactly how we are going to do that later.
While the couldn't figure out a way to get repeal & replace passed, they have more unity on tax cuts. I am not convinced that the benefits package for current and future Feds won't be significantly altered.
karinothing, I know quite a few newer federal employees that would prefer the FERS pension go away. The contribution percentage is high, a lot of people don't want to sign up for 20-30 years to get a decent return. Even then, you could probably do better taking that contribution and investing.
Ugh.... this is not good for my Friday motivation.
Returns may not be as high but is guaranteed unlike investing.
People want a functioning government, but don't want to pay for it. You can't have it both ways.
I am not sure they want a functioning government. Most republicans I know (which is few, I admit) don't want the gov to pay for anything, they want to basically blow up everything and start over.

Except, in my personal experience, they are the ones that bitch the loudest when they need the government for something.

But no, nothing has passed right now.
Thanks. So, what do you think the R response will be? This is what they want, to cut things to the bone and have everyone self sufficient, but the reality is their ways will hurt them too.
Okay I know this rant isn't exactly on point but THESE FUCKING GUYS! DH was summoned to D.C. for a conference/meeting with his counterpoints in various agencies of the DOI. He had to extend out two days because the assistant deputy secretary (or whatever the right title is; he's a trump appointee) was unable to meet with them until 2 pm today - Friday. HE FUCKING CANCELLED AN HOUR BEFORE! Rescheduled for Tuesday. Ktxbye! Drain the swamp indeed. I hope he couldn't be there because his fucking boss is about to be shitcanned.
