Definitely money in the commissary account. And, mail throughout the year. I’m keeping up with a friend who’s currently incarcerated, and mail and researching his case are what keeps him busy.
Mail is a HUGE deal to them. My nephew has been in prison for over a year now and a few of us in the family write to him quite often and he always tells us in every letter back how happy he is to receive mail from us.
It looks like these are available only in certain states. It might be useful if your state is listed and also for sending things during the incarceration.

eta: money is also highly needed and wanted.
We will for sure write and depending on where he is (I’m not sure yet) we will visit. It’s a minimum security prison, so I’m sure visiting is fine

Good to hear that you will visit but it will take some time to get it set up.
He will have to put you on a list to visit (they can only have so many people on the list) and then you have to be cleared to be accepted as a visitor. It takes a bit of time.
Oh and just a side note, you cannot wear a bra with an underwire when visiting. No lie.
What is his general financial situation? Will he NEED extra cash while he's in, or will he be getting enough of that anyway?
Personally I'd buy him an experience or restaurant certificate or something he can do to enjoy his time before he goes in. And/or booze if that's not something he has an issue with. If you don't know his schedule, maybe get him an experience certificate that he can use whenever he wants - so he isn't locked into doing it before he goes to prison, but it's an option if he wants something fun to do in the next few weeks.
I think if I were headed to prison I'd want some normalcy and some fun before I surrendered.

The underwire restriction is completely dependant upon in what system he's incarcerated. I'm my state, underwires are not banned.

What is the reason for the ban on them? When I first saw it i thought it was a joke.

It's probably that it can be filed down and used as a weapon. In my facilities, we can't bring in binder clips, because they fashion them into weapons.
This would be for after he is incarcerated, but if he is able to get daily mail, a subscription to a newspaper. This was very much appreciated when a friend of mine was incarcerated for several months.
Does he have a family? A photo shoot with his kids before he goes in so they have a recent picture of them all together as a family. (or at least a photo of him with kids so they'll have that and so will he). A lot will change in two years.
I would agree with something he could enjoy before he goes in like a restaurant gift card. Books are a good option or an Amazon gift card. You really can’t bring much to prison other than books, magazines & newspapers... And I’d agree with those that said to write to him. I’ve been writing to my friend that is in prison since August 2015. Getting letters and visits and phone calls is pretty much all he has while he’s in there but he’s finally getting out in October 2018. What a nightmare
