Hope Dexter is feeling better this morning. When he comes home ask about administering fluids at home. It's easy to do. Don't feel guilty, it's very common for kidney cats to become dehydrated and to need extra fluids subcutaneously.

I am sorry I am glad to hear he seems to be improving a bit. When we had trouble getting my cat to eat I literally hand fed her tuna covered in catnip. Might be something to try.
My Persian that had kidney disease did exactly this same thing. She had to get a feeding tube. Eventually she decided that she like the prescription food A/D and ate that for the rest of her life. I hope Dexter gets better and can come home soon.
Aw, Mr. Dexter! I am so glad it sounds like he's doing better (being hydrated and him drinking is HUGE!).
A lot of animals won't eat when they're in the hospital. George losts 6 lbs (to be fair, he is 120 lbs lol) a few weeks ago when he was in the clinic over the weekend because he absolutely refused food. Once he got home and wasn't so stressed he ate just fine. I am guessing Dexter just needs to relax a bit before he can eat. Poor pumpkin.
