Not anymore than he has already lost the election. I am going to be honest and say that I think he was really speaking about his purpose during the election, not once in office (but perhaps I am being too nice).
The % of undecideds is so very small. He is right that for purposes of the election he really doesn't have to worry about 47% of the population (although not the 47% he mentioned, since THAT 47% includes many rural white voters, who are going to vote for him). He only has to worry about undecideds and most of the undecided are not in what romney deems the 47%.

I have tried not to get too riled up by the campaign this year, but this just made me livid. Aside from the gross overgeneralizations, his contemptuous attitude toward the less fortunate is awful. I understand there are a lot of strong feelings about assistance programs, and abuse exists, but at the same time, I don't think it is so crazy to expect your government to ensure the wellbeing of its citizens including by helping them obtain basic necessities for life when needed. So what, in Romney's perfect world, its sink or swim on your own -- if you can't afford food and can't find a job, then you should quietly slink off to a corner and die?
This is from months ago and basically saying to his supporters at a fundraisers that there is a narrow margin of voters that we can hopefully win to our side. The other statement was to say there is a support system in place for the poor - not that he does not care about them, but that we need to focus on the middle class right now. His solution is to raise all boats - bringing the poor upward along with everyone else - with more opportunity, better paying jobs and improved economy. A small snippet taken out of contex misconstrues it's meaning --- and we can also find many from Obama as well.

.... And this might be crazy, but I do think I'm entitled to health care, food, and shockingly shelter.[/quote][/i]
I was thinking this exact thing as I was listening to him! I think he was preaching to the choir, though; and I don't think this is going to lose him many votes at all. I think his base was probably nodding their heads in agreement ... those damn bloodsucking poor, feeling all entitled to food and health care and a roof over their heads and a warm coat on their backs ... that's what's wrong with our country.

This.
Romney scares me in a way that no candidate in the past has. I don't understand how anyone who is so out of touch with reality (not even the 47% reality, but the 99% reality) is a viable candidate. Yet he is.
What really kills me is all the Obama bashing I hear from my mother-in-law's side of the family -- THAT GREW UP ON PUBLIC ASSISTANCE and, in the case of my husband's uncles, are counting the days until they can try to live off of social security for the rest of their lives because they haven't saved anything. But of course they have Romney signs in their yards.

It's funny that people get so riled up about this- Obama has not said it in exact words, but he has gross hatred for the rich. Yet, he gets away with it.

Honestly?? Obama is "rich" by is own definition. He thinks they (including him) should pay more taxes, not die of starvation, sickliness, or become homeless.

Seriously? Gross hatred for the rich? I guess he hates himself?
I am willing to listen to you, but you must tell me where you got gross hatred from.
I don't even think Romeny hates the poor! He just isn't concerned with their vote.

The cognitive dissonance required is amazing, but is so common. People think others are abusing the system, but they deserve the assistance.
Or they think they've "paid in" so they're just getting back what they've already paid.
I think a lot of it is the fact that even people who don't pay income taxes still have taxes deducted from their checks (they just get it all back when they file their tax returns). I think I remember seeing a study that showed that even though nearly half of the country doesn't pay federal income tax, a way higher percentage think they do because they see it deducted from their check.
Either way, the mental gymnastics required to be able to support a candidate (and party) that thinks you're scum of the earth is amazing to me.
I would just like to note that I have clients who have net worth of several million dollars who pay ZERO dollars in income tax. Like they actually owe ZERO on the line that says "total tax".
So it's not just those on public assistance who "get out" of paying taxes in this country.

Gross generalization ahead, but I think in many cases the people who vote against their financial interests are voting their religion and social politics. Just like I'm going to vote for the Pro-Choice candidate every time, they're going to vote for the Pro-Life candidate every time, etc. It just so happens I'm fortunate enough to be fiscally and socially liberal, so my candidate usually fills all my political requirements. Yay.

Ugh. Yes. I know a lot of social conservatives who are lower middle class with a few kids in this exact situation. They don't pay taxes, but they think they do. They get back even more than they paid in. Most had their kids young & were on Medicaid while pregnant. But they totally think they're different than those (black) people who live off of the system.

I was using the words of another poster. Hatred is wrong, perhaps dislikes another. He feels or comes acrossto me that they OWE america cause they are so wealthy. I have seen him say that they should pay more because they have more- BS!! They are not to be punished. I dont see obama paying extra taxes,do i? You can pay more on your own. He also states the utter bullshit of " you didnt build that" crap. He feels bad for the poor, which is normal, but at the expense of the rich. How about equal tax percentage across the board? Romney is not proposing that either, but much of the upper class owns the companies we all work for. Without them, there is no middle class.
Eh, Obama was still elected after his middle America clinging to their guns and their God" comment in the same situation. I don't see why this would be a game changer when that wasn't.
Because that is only a part of what Obama actually said? He then said that those were the people he needed to appeal to and needed to figure out a way to do so. Not that he didnt give two sh*ts about them.
"My dad, as you probably, know was the governor of Michigan and was the head of a car company. But he was born in Mexico ... and, uh, had he been born of, uh, Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot at winning this," Romney said. "But he was unfortunately born to Americans living in Mexico. ... I mean I say that jokingly, but it would be helpful to be Latino."
This sounds like he was getting pretty close to Obama is only President because he is black.
What would have been helpful is for him to have been raised with some empathy for others instead of as an entitled spoiled ass.
In a separate video, Romney talks about his success. "Both my dad and [wife] Ann's dad did quite well in their lives. But when they came to the end of their lives and passed along the inheritance to Ann and me, we both decided to give it all away. So I have inherited nothing. Everything that Ann and I have, we earned the old-fashioned way."
Romney's parents did pay for his boarding school, his college, his graduate school and his first home.
I wish I had 'earned' everything the old fashioned way instead of the new way with student loans, no grad school because I'm short $75,000 and paying off a mortgage.
One thing the Republicans have been really, really good at is convincing millions of people to vote against their own interests.
This is one thing that absolutely amazes and infuriates me.
+1. My father says I am a socialist because I support Obama. But at the same time he says he is "against the rich people" and is more than willing to accept government aid at any opportunity.

Puppiedoggie. This is where I just fundamentally disagree with you. Asking the rich to pay more, Obama included in this, is not meant to be a punishment. We have tried the trickle down economy for quite some time, it doesn't work. The rich aren't going to get any richer in this economy, people aren't buying their goods, the rich don't get richer by passing money between themselves. Obama thinks raising taxes on the rich will help the economy, in turn, helping those people he is taxing... And everyone else. Everyone benefits from a flourishing economy. You may disagree that raising taxes will help the economy, but I think you misunderstand the intent if you truely believe it is just punishment.
I'd like to point out that while 10% on a million is technically more than 10% of $10,000 it doesn't mean you're paying more than your fair share. It just seems like more because the dollar value is higher.
**disclaimer, I have no idea what actual tax rates are

any many millionaires/billionaires themselves are happy to pay more in taxes to help society. See, Warren Buffett and Stephen King

While many want to pay more, they are welcome to NOW. They CAN do that. No, it's not literally punishment, but it's wrong. Our tax system is sooo messed up right now.Everyone pays something different based on who they use for their taxes and/or what they know about loopholes, etc. So I don't agree with either party- tax a group less and another more- I do not agree.

I think 'everyone' would be 'the rich' since I doubt a low income earner could afford that kind of tax advice. You're contradicting yourself.

Not really, we use a CPA and we do mighty fine with our tax rate. Thanks!
