I struggle with that issue, myself. My hair isn’t long or thick and spending an hour for a quick trim kills me. My old stylist was super fast and cheap and I can’t find either of those now that she’s stopped doing hair.
Four hours, though, will destroy my patience. I would actually be willing to pay more for speed/efficiency because I don’t have extra time in my schedule.
No matter who I go to it usually takes about 4 hrs for a cut and highlight (I'm in the process of finding a new stylist so I've been trying out different people). They always fit in other clients while I sit and wait with color on. Even if I go to someone who isn't chatty I sit there for about 4 hrs. I pay about $150, so I definitely would put up with that for $80!
I get baylage, cut, and dry/straightened and it’s 3 hours and $90 plus tip. The reason mine takes so long is bc she doesn’t stick me under the lights and just lets the chemical do its thing.
I don’t think it’s that long for the process, but I’m the only customer booked and she isn’t overly chatty or anything.
I keep telling her to charge me more. I just give her a big tip.

Similar to the other posters- only you can decide if the price & quality are worth your time.
I would not have time/patience for a 4 hour salon experience every time i went. My cut & highlights take <2 hours, and cost $150 + tip. This is the cheapest stylist i've ever used and she is great. (My previous stylists charged $175-225).
I think the last appointment of the day might be worse, as he will be farther behind by then, but my next appointment, I did book it 90 min earlier, and I'm hoping going sooner may help him not be as far behind.
I think it comes down to, like a few of you said, saving money or saving time or which you value more. I do value my time a lot, and for many things, would rather pay a bit more to have something go quicker. I think I'd be willing to pay up to $50 more to shave even an hour off the time, but that would involve a lot of calling around and trial and error. For now, I'll try getting early appointments and seeing if it helps.
Also, I may just have good luck with affordable stylists because the stylist before this one was awesome and charged me even less for the same services (she moved away ). I started going to her as a teenager, so I've only had these two stylists for the last 15 or so years. I figured maybe this was just the usual rate for my area, and then I went to Ulta and had sticker shock! After hearing from all of you, I think now that these two stylists just charge a lot less, and I have obviously lucked out.

$80 for all that? I'd spend 8 hours there, lol. Last time I went it was almost $400 for just baylage. I'm SCARRED I tell you. SCARRED. (obviously, since this is the 2nd time in two days I've mentioned it, lol. But they were both in hair threads, so whatever)

I pay $65+tip for highlights, cut, blow dry and straighten. It takes around 2 hours. I'm pretty sure I would go insane in 4 hours. 2 hours makes me twitchy, but I have really thick hair. She chats with me, but not overly so. She will stop sometimes to answer her phone and make appointments, but it's not excessive so I don't mind.
Is there someone else at the same salon that you could book with? It would be a similar price and maybe not as long.

That time frame seems crazy too me, but the price does too. I might try to get used to it for the savings. For comparison, my girlfriend and I almost always go together and our appointments are together with the same stylist. She gets highlights, lowlights, color, cut, and blowdry, and I get color, funky streaks, cut and blowdry. And we're generally out in 90 minutes, 2 hours tops. But it's $130 for me and similar for her, including tip.

I would pay more to get out of there less and I would really hate waiting a half hour each time to start. I do have thin hair and not much of it. I get simple highlights and a cut and it usually takes 1.5 hours. I would not want to be there four hours
I have no idea how your stylist covers his cost at those prices, so I’d be willing to put up with just about anything if I otherwise liked the work.
toner, color, bleach, and processing solutions add up. I spend $24 on just toner and processor when I DIY between appts and shop the beauty supply store.
Keep in mind, it may be longer since its the weekend. Have you ever done a weekday appt? He may not be as booked and get through you quicker. Maybe not but it could be worth trying.
ETA: I get highlights (last time I did blonde and purple) and a cut in under 2 hours for $75 before tip. I live in a smallish town so not many options.
I am normally in the chair for 2 hours for roots, foil highlights, wash, blow dry, straighten, and cut. However, my stylist is notorious for running behind. Yesterday I waited almost a full hour after my appointment time before she finished the person in front of me and there was someone after me that was an hour past her appointment time before I left.
When I first dyed my hair pink I was there 7 hours, and after that with the color routinely for about 4-5 hours. That was with her being right there with all the processes.
I'd be annoyed if my hair dresser was constantly late/overly chatty.
I read magazines I don't have to pay for. I read books. **uninterrupted** I gossip with my stylist about people either she or I doesn't know and/or bitch about our shitty ass president. I shop online on my phone. There's free wine and beer and the shop next door that sells macrons.
My hair takes 2-3 hours (roots, balayage, tone, cut and style), but I am my stylist's only client during that time. She does talk but her hands stay busy.
I would offer to pay double and ask to take up two appointments, so that you might be able to cut down the time to 3 hours. I think you are paying the price for your service you receive. You aren't paying with money, you are paying with time.
My old stylist took for-freaking-ever for color/highlights/cut and blow out. She was terrific, but it took 4-5 hours in a regular salon. She was always late, too.
I went through a few others who were quicker, but worked very limited hours, so I moved on. My new guy does foils first, root touchup while the foils process, then I do 30 minutes under the dryer (he cuts another client), I get a shampoo, cut and blow out. Generally it takes 2-2 1/2 hours. A glaze might add another 10 minutes if he puts it just on the hair not being colored. My hair never looked better. Alas, he's in the city so there's a longer commute.
$80 at my stylist would get a cut/ partial highlights or color- that's an awesome price.
My stylist takes two hours for color, cut, blowdry, style. She does book my family during that time, she sets me up with color and cuts the kids and husband. I have no problem with that, I don't need her hovering over me while my color sets. The kids and husband go and I get over an hour of quiet.
