Fair point, but she wasn’t divorced right? She was just married to a guy who had been divorced. So is that what prompted them to make her a hand maid?
She was also running. So maybe they made her a hand maid because they caught her running and knew she was fertile because of her kid.
I wouldn't be surprised if neighbors or acquaintances or true believers ratted out sinners so that they themselves would be left alone or seen in a better light. Not saying that happened with June and Luke but they weren't necessarily discrete about their affair. They met in public, she had a confrontation with his wife with an audience, etc. Hard to know how that timeline overlapped with the Eyes. Could be when they found her escaping they did a background check and found out the dirty details.
Divorce filings are public record. Like PP said, June got picked up because she was running. But I imagine that when Gilead dissolved second marriages en masse to create more handmaids, it wasn’t hard to find out who those people were.

For some reason I always thought they took the hardline traditional view of marriage.
Divorce isn’t an option= 2nd marriages with a living spouse equal adultery because you are still married in the eyes of god
I don't think the Martha's would be pissed that June didn't leave. The one in her house (does she have another name? I can't recall) obviously cares for June, but I think the escape was more about getting the baby girl out of Gilead. June was supposed to go with because she was the one who could care for the baby (and, obviously, its mother!) but if the baby escapes and is cared for I think their goal is met.
I really liked the episode. I was shocked when Serena actually gave the baby back. I really thought she wasn't going to. Then for a second, I thought she was going to leave with them. I also am glad June stayed. It would have been wonderful to see her escape, but I understand how she can't leave Hannah and I think the show needs her in the thick of things to continue to make sense. It would be a very different show if she was living in Canada, though it would be interesting to see her fight from there (assuming she would do that - I assume she would if Hannah was still in Gilead).
I can't wait for next season. As hard as this show is to watch, it's the most compelling thing on TV (IMO) in a while and so well done.
Also, I was glad to see that Yvonne Strahovski was nominated for an Emmy this year (along with several others). I thought she just killed it this season. I hate Serena but I also thought she was the most interesting character this season.
"She's going to maneuver herself into a position where she's less brutalized and has more control and more freedom to possibly find her daughter, or to strike out against Gilead. Our scale in season three is really the scale of resistance, and the scale of uprising. She's finding new areas of weakness inside Gilead."

This is what I expected for season 3 after the finale ended with "Burning Down the House". June is going back to fuck shit up and I'm here for it.
I too wondered if it would go this way. And with Emily and the baby gone it wrapped up without having Serena, June, or Commander Lawerance really get in trouble. They can frame Emily for it all and she’ll be gone... except Nick keeping Fred from going after June. But Fred has some skeletons in his closet that he doesn’t want Nick to expose, so maybe that will not be an issue?

Fred wouldn't have known Nick was an eye before all this right? Are we to assume that he knows now, and has to watch himself?

He may suspect it, but he is so blinded by his ego right now that I don’t know if he’d assume Nick was an eye or that he is just worried about his own previous discretion’s coming out - or both.
What skeletons does Fred have in his closet that you all keep talking about?
What could Nick rat him out for and get him in trouble?
I'm inventing a drinking game. Only 1 rule: drink when you see Waterford hanging on the wall, a full bottle of the finest champagne you can afford.
Im sure there are more but the ones I know of off hand include secret rendezvous with June in his office (nick was the original messenger to be wanted to meet), taking June to Jezebel's twice (+rape outside of the ceremony), taking Waterford to Jezebel's without June, the suggested affair/rape with the prior handmaid who hung herself, arranging a meeting with hannah. Then there are the things he "condoned" such as Serena writing legislation while he was in the hospital- he beat her but didn't turn her over to the authorities.
Putnam lost a hand for extracurricular BJs so I'm sure Waterfords punishment would be worse.
Luke (O-T Fagbenle) will be on a quest for revenge. When Luke confronted Fred in Canada, he finally had a face to put on the evils of Gilead — not to mention the man who was raping his wife — and that clarity will be a dangerous thing for him in Season 3. "I think that now that he's met Fred, face-to-face, that is the focus of his fury," Miller said. "All of the sudden the Gilead, and the Gilead system has been reduced to Fred Waterford and he's gonna find a way to get Fred." Sounds like Fred should watch his back — and maybe never return to Canada?

i just watched this entire series in a 24 hour period (i am off work recovering from a hysterectomy so I found it fitting).
the Fenway group hanging that wasn't scene was insane. and i thought I was going to have a heart attack when they got pulled off the little plane.
i have not read the book - I get that the handmaids are ferile women...but how is it determined for the rest od the pecking order? like the cooks wear all gray...were they unmarried? and were the commanders and wives just on the right side of the war when Gilead won?
at first it was man this is crazy but the show does a great job showing how this became normal quicker than they thought.

That's a good question, how they decide who is who.
Rita had a son so maybe they were formerly fertile women who've now aged out of child bearing?
I don't know. The econopeople are the biggest mystery to me. They're fertile, yet you're so desperate for handmaids you're picking unwomen out of a toxic waste dump?
I get the feeling an explanation is not well thought out nor forthcoming.

Piecing together tidbits from the book and the show, I think econopeople are those who were in good standing with the regime (obedient, pious, in a “valid” marriage) and they were allowed to stay married. Fertile women who weren’t in a Gilead-sanctioned marriage were forced to become handmaids. I think the regime believes that what they do to the handmaids is justified because they’re “adulterers”, whereas the econowives are good and pious.
The single, infertile women who were in good standing became Martha’s and the rest were sent to the colonies.
