I was curious so I pulled up the map showing everything with at least 3 BR and 1.5 baths and clicked on the first thing I saw in the price range to which I am accustomed.
It's perfectly normal (and lovely) till you get to what I assume is the master suite.
I actually love that. It's an older home so they're working with the original fireplace locations as they added a bath.
Yeah, sand away those white painted things and I think the master bedroom is fine. And that master bathroom is kinda baller. Stand under the dual rain shower heads while a fire is roaring in the nearby fireplace. What’s not to like?

the fireplace is what jumped out at you? (also pretty sure that was the attic, so not positive that there would have been a FP up there originally. Chimney yes. FP, maybe not) How about the fact that the shower has no walls and apparently these people don't own toothbrushes or anything else you might want adjacent to a sink.
also I could NEVER forgive them for the stupid decals on the wood floors.
eta: to be clear, the house is kind of amazing, but hard no on the actual useaility of that shower. In a hotel, awesome. In my home? annoying AF.

We have a similarly useless area by our sink LOL. Although in this case it seems like they have plenty of room for a floating vanity so I'm not sure why they skipped that.
The wall-less shower trend is bizarre! I have seen it a lot lately, though.

I think the shower is kinda weird though because it doesn't have any doors so I would imagine it just makes a mess. It must be so weird to shower next to a fireplace. LOL

yeah, I dont' get why there isn't any sort of vanity. Clearly there's oodles of space for it. There's also no medicine cabinet since they just have those little round mirrors. So...like, nobody shaves their face or uses makeup or hair products in this house I guess. Or if they do, they do it in the downstairs bathroom. Which is just silly.
Beyond the mess of a wall-less shower. I hate them because your steam escapes and you get cold. I even get annoyed with my H when he opens the bathroom door when I shower. Stop letting my steam escape!!!

I mean...to be fair, with no shower door a wooden vanity would totally warp at the bottom in that room. It is a total waste of space though.
You know what makes me feel super awesome about myself? Gushing about how cheap real estate is when I'm struggling to find something decent that I can afford. Very cool.
The house we really really wanted but lost had a tub room. Not a bathroom. Just like an office-type room with a giant jetted tub and nothing else.
I have seen at least 2 houses with no door between the master bedroom and master bathroom. One of those could have had a door added. The other not only didn't have a door, but it didn't have a wall and instead had a couch facing the bathroom. One house we looked at had at least 6 pieces of taxidermy in the laundry room. The last house we looked at had a kitchen island with the sink on one side and the dishwasher on the other so that you had to walk around the island to load the dishwasher. The first house we looked at had an abomination of a kitchen. It had a bathroom sink in the kitchen and full sized dishwasher on wheels that you would move over to the sink to load and hook up to the water.
Our agent sent us this one, but we're not bothering to see it. The only thing separating this one from a very major and not particularly desirable street is a tire shop. Also, there are 2 bedrooms on the 2nd floor, but the bathrooms are on the main floor and in the basement. I'd rather have a 1.5 bath with one toilet on each of the main and upper floors than my second full bath in the basement. Unless there is an egress from the basement so that I can put a bedroom down there, any basement bathroom should just be a bonus.

In that house you just yell, "H, chop more kindling and get that damn fire roaring!"
We saw this one. It's super cute. But they already had multiple offers when we saw it. We liked it for the list price but were not interested in a bidding war over it.
This one is also deceptively cute on the inside (second place well below the other one I posted, but this one comes with a pole for your Packers flag!):

In a bathroom with a shower, all tile, and no doors it is highly likely that I, being a giant klutz, would seriously injure myself. Hell, I already fainted in a bathroom and managed to knock the toilet in such a way that the plumber had to install a new pipe.
sorry if I haven't been helpful. It's a frustrating process and I like looking for other people FAR more than I like looking for myself. I'm sure you've been through these listings over and over but sometimes (for me) if someone else said "HEY THAT'S CUTE" it would open my eyes a bit to something I might not have otherwise considered.
kath16 you are good at this! @angryharpy , you should go see the ones Kath just posted; they are too cute! Good luck in your house buying journey, friend!

The Hartung Ave one she posted closed yesterday. The 69th Street one is already under contract. She's got good taste, I'll give her that.
You practically have to show up with an offer in hand. The second house we bid and lost on was on the market for no more than 72 hours, I think.

Your market sounds awful for buyers. Where we moved from had what sounds like a similar market (except home prices are absolutely ridiculously insane) and it was so incredibly fucking annoying to hunt with a limited budget when everything went to a bidding war after 5 mins on the market. When we bought in our current area where houses are priced more reasonably it was really fucking annoying how all of our city friends gushed about how cheap the real estate was when it was at the top of our small budget and opined about how they could just never live in a house without 2 remodeled bathrooms. 🙄
oh god, @angryharpy, that is a TOUGH market for buyers! I just got stressed thinking about that.
Houses here sit on the market for anywhere from a week to 2 years. But our COL is higher than yours I think; most of the houses that Kath posted would be closer to 300-350K.
I am sorry it has been such a struggle! Do you have a realator that you like that can keep looking for you? They can get you in on houses right when they go to list (or before).

Well, for FWIW, I think 1500+ sq ft sounds palatial. If you’re serious about it, I would walk through it with a contractor and see what would be doable and for how much.
I don’t know how many more kids you’re planning but we turned our small fourth bedroom into a playroom and it’s perfect for toy storage. Is there any flex space in the house? Unfinished basement? When we were looking, we tried to focus less on how the house was currently being used and more on what we could put where. Fundamentally, in a tough market, you’re buying the land and home footprint. Almost everything else can be changed.

Meh, my daughters bedroom is 12x6. She has a twin loft bed and it's fine. But with the size of the other rooms, compared to the square footage of the house- it must have a horrible layout. I wonder if they split rooms to make it 4 bedroom? Our master is 12x12 and it is tight with a queen size bed- even 11x11 is pushing it. And this house is 1500 sq feet, which is way more than we have.
Are you looking in a particular neighborhood? What's the min bed / bath? I know of at least one person who will be putting their house on the market soon.
I've known of a few people who have sold recently and they've had multiple offers within days. Sorry - it doesn't sound like a fun time to be buying right now.
