Folasade Adelola, a Shelburne resident, is challenging Sen. Bernie Sanders for his congressional seat this fall. Sanders is registered as an Independent and a Democrat for the Vermont primary election.
Adelola, 55, describes herself and her stances on policy as a “Clinton Democrat.”
“I will push (Sanders) on issues,” Adelola said. She does not agree with Sanders running as a Democrat. “Like we don’t have anyone else?”
Her top political priorities stem from life experience: immigration reform, women’s health issues and gun control reform.
How is the shouty old man allowed to run as an Independent AND Democrat? Those three issues I quoted above prove that Adelola is better qualified to run as a D.

He runs as a Dem (hey, he caucuses with Dems and the VT Dem party is okay with it!) then refuses the nomination and runs as an Independent so he's not beholden to the party or its ideals. That way he clogs up the Dem party election mechanics until he's got the nod.

I just saw it come down my feed, Twitter or e-mail, not sure which but I am not unhappy about this requirement. Must have been FB because there were a whole lot of "and show tax returns" comments too.
The locals here don't think she has the chops, at least not yet. I don't care. I just want him challenged. And I'd LOVE to see a WOC beat him. Especially an immigrant WOC. Surprise upset of the decade.
And really, that's not at all an unreasonable requirement.
If you're not a navel gazing, self absorbed, yes. The Bros are going to have a conniption fit. Their meltdowns over super delegates will pale in comparison.
But didn't Bernie temporarily become a Dem while he was running for President? I thought I remembered him switching back to "independent" after he lost the nom.

He did run as a D and then immediately switch back to I basically the second HRC’s nomination was official. Apparently, he’s been running as a D in the VT primary and then refusing the nomination so he can retain his independent stance, essentially blocking any actual D candidates from challenging him. So he’s been a cockapotamus for years now.

Yes. He runs as a Dem in his Senate primary too, and then switches affiliation after he gets the nomination. He has been doing this for a while. This rule would, in theory, prevent those shenanigans.

Only for the presidential race. He's still able to pull this cockapotamus (thank you 5kcandlesinthewind !) stunt in the VT senatorial race.

Oh darn, I didnt read carefully enough. I wonder whether Sanders would have changed his affiliation to I after he won the election, if he had. I’m kind of guessing yes.
The Bernie Bros are losing their damn minds over this so I’m happy.

Anything that pisses the Berners off makes me gleeful. They're running our Dems in our LD/county Dems and in too many parts of our state. Effing usurpers.
*head tilt* Do you think he was planning on doing that during his presidential run? Was this ever discussed in 2016?
No one breathed a word of it back during the primary but I can only assume so based on his behavior in other races. Plus you know that AW would love to try to claim the mantle of “1st 3rd party president” or some shit after coasting on democratic coattails.

Say he had done what you guys are talking about. Could the Dems have put up HRC anyway, if Bernie was running as an I? I mean, not saying that they would or should have, but I just know that I keep hearing about how the party can run itself how it wants. Wondering if they could put someone else up if the candidate turns it down.

If he had done this he would have had to keep the D designation through the general I think, because of the rules for ballot qualification in all the different states. He could have switched his party affiliation once he won the election (if he won.) They could definitely put someone else up if the candidate they nominated turned it down, but this is a little different from that.
However, as a Vermonter I want to just forwarn you all—Bernie is GOD here; I doubt she will win, especially after only living here for 2 years. (To be clear, I HOPE she wins, I just think she has a snowball’s chance in hell.)
Hopefully, though, she can stick around and get involved in politics and work in such a way that these locals trust her and don’t view her as a “flat lander.” We could really use someone awesome like folasade!
