This ad is making the rounds on my Air Force forums as well. On top of being a kick-ass Dem, she hits a log of sweet spots for Rs too (veteran, “outsider”, etc).

That’s my congressional district - I was torn between her and another candidate in the runoff, but ultimately voted for her because I thought she was more electable (the other candidate was more progressive). Our district iincludes the north suburbs of Austin but extends all the way up to a large military base with all the small Texas towns in between, so hopefully her military experience will be a big help in getting her elected.
She had been VERY quiet IMO since winning the primary, so hopefully they were just getting some plans laid out and some ducks in a row for the fight ahead. I was nervous, but the ad is amazing. I did a little fan girl dance when I saw LMM tweet about it!

Not enough racist dog whistling to attract the Rs.
This is one of the best campaign ads I’ve ever seen and I’m even more excited because a friend of my wife’s wrote and produced it!
I keep thinking of the production and creative team behind this ad! Besides just being a kick ass add for a kick ass dem, it’s a brilliant, well crafted, short film. Is this a campaign getting tons of money? How did she afford this?

She should be fundraising a decent amount. Se has a VERY compelling story that sets her apart which is critical for fundraising. I would expect a candidate like this to have a total congressional campaign budget in the 3-4 million range, give or take depending on the district. It’s a competitive race against an incumbent in a pretty consevative district. This production team isn’t absurdly expensive, but also the video is a great fundraising tool (mainly to solicit donations from out of district) so in this case it was probably a very good investment!
ETA: my wife just told me she estimated the video cost about half a million to produce, with the caveat that getting the rights to the song they chose was one of the larger expenses involved. The production team is one of the smallest expenses for a video like this. There was a helicopter in it!
Someone pointed out the subtle "wife-mother" with the attractive, masculine husband, her holding her baby, etc. also sends out a very subtle subliminal message that will reel in Rs. That didn't register with me at all but now that she said it, I can see it. Brilliant.

Coming back to add more...
One problem is that, as a resident of this district, the most people I have seen discussing this ad are from outside of Texas. The few from Texas are just south of the district in Austin. I don't watch TV often (at all, really)- I don't know if this has been playing on the local stations. I'm curious to know how/why it's getting national but not local attention.

I have no insider knowledge of this campaign so this is speculative, but if I had to guess their strategy is to drive donations from out of district to fund in-district engagement of voters. Stuff like polling of potential voters on issues and messages, door-to-door canvassing, mailers and other literature and even phone calls come with a hefty price tag when you’re competing with an incumbent who is radically different from you. Videos are honestly not an amazing way to get your message out to your actual constituents since you lack any real targeting capabilities. It’s good at grabbing attention which is better for fundraising than voter commitment, which is achieved in other ways.
ETA: it is way too long for a TV spot so if it’s being aired on traditional media it’s a much abbreviated, less narrative version. This was designed for social media, specifically to go viral.
I am assuming the other female pilot to win the distinction was the pilot from the Southwest window incident?
The first was an Army helicopter pilot CWO3 Lori Hill in 2006. Only 7 women have received the Distinguished Flying Cross in the history of the award, and only 2 with the Valor device.

I don't know much about this sort of stuff, but it seems like one big advantage to a splashy video like this is to drive DNC attention -- get funding from them, get high profile Dems to come there and campaign and do fundraisers for her, etc. Much like how you dress as nicely as possible when you go to the bank to ask for a loan, this seems like it's screaming "It is smart and safe to invest in me."

This too! Absolutely. And making the race “one to watch” will ultimately drive Democratic voters to the polls and help them feel like MJ has a chance against her opponent, so that is also a downstream voter recruitment tactic. These are all longer-term strategies but there’s a lot of time (in election time) between now and November.

seeyalater52 I shared this on my fb because I know a lot of people in TX and a friend who is deaf responded that there’s no closed captioning so she couldn’t follow it. Not sure if you can get word to the producer. I imagine this is going viral and will reach a huge audience. FWIW, I hardly watch videos with sound on my phone, so I appreciate it when they have the captioning, too.

Oh no! There is definitely a version out there that does have captioning, as the first 4 times I watched it I was on the train and had it on mute using the captions to follow. But you're right it's not the official version. I'm going to see if I can find where I viewed it that first time and share a link but it might be lost to the depths of the internet and it's not showing up in a search.
