We recently (ish.. 6 months ago) moved into a new home. It’s MUCH larger than what we had before.
We said we’d live in it for a while before deciding on outfitting the living room... and we’re still at a loss. Like all true quandaries, it’s slightly awkward shape/layout to furnish, and DH and I have very different styles. So hiring out to get a functional and cohesive space sounds like the way to go.
Who do you work with for getting design help without completely blowing your budget? It’s basically one big empty room, so we need everything - furniture, rug, TV/entertainment system, art, etc.
We also have a big bay window in there that would be ideal for a window seat with storage - we’ve seen a few similar layouts that have one. Who should we talk to about designing/building something like that?
We also have a large living room. I met with an interior designer who did a couple layout options to show us how to select the right size rug and couch for the space. We bought those on our own. And then I happened to meet another designer who we just clicked with that helped us do all the rest (credenza, TV size, lighting, decoration for room and walls).
So we didn't really have a plan of attack, but things worked out ok. :-) I would've never picked the right scale/size furniture and decor on my own.
Good luck - it can be overwhelming - but so great when its done!

I've been looking at design services through companies like Room & Board, West Elm, etc. Usually they're either free or give you a credit towards furniture for the cost of the design service. Even if you don't end up going with them, hopefully they can give you ideas that will work in your space.
I recently used Modsy and I’m obsessed. I want to do it for every other room in my house. And plan to eventually.
The smallest package is around $60 but I used a new user promo discount to get it under $50. They have unlimited back and forth to meet your goals.
My only complaint so far is that they were unable to suggest window treatments or bed linens. It’s only really layout, furniture, wall decor, color scheme type stuff. Also most of the furniture suggestions were pricier than I usually spend, but I’m more used to shopping at cheap places so it’s not like they were really outrageous.
I was planning on posting about it once I pull it all together but that will probably be months from now since we’re going to hold off on buying some of the furniture to spread out the cost a bit.

Do post about it! At this rate, we may be ready to start moving right around the time we send the kids off to college... they’re 5 and 2! 😉
