I loved that Queenie turned. Looking forward to seeing that plot point play out.
WTeverlovingFUCK is with the Dumbledore reveal? Like, no. I'm not buying this one. We did the "secret sibling no one knew about" thing TWICE in Deathly Hallows. It's not new, it's not inventive, and it's not as if JKR needed another reason to get Jude Law's character into the fight in the next movie.
I will say that I liked Eddie Redmayne in this movie far more than I did in the earlier one.
Tina's character was really underutilized. All she seemed to do was stand there, looking scared and/or determined, and she didn't even get an opportunity to save herself or do anything important plot-wise.
Loved the return to Hogwarts, even though it felt like fanservice. I didn't care, it was fun to see Dumbledore in the DADA classroom.

Agree with alllllll of this. DH and I are trying to figure out whereTF Credence fits into the Dumbledore family tree.
Also interesting point I’ve been pondering - wasn’t Arianna Dumbledore an obscurus?
I just saw it today, and was really disappointed. I found it confusing and the plot seemed convoluted and jumped around too much. It almost seemed like some transition scenes were cut. Also, I'm annoyed about the secret Dumbledore sibling thing.

YES! When Credence and Nagini suddenly appeared on the roof with Johnny Depp I almost spit out my drink. That was the roughest transition I've seen in a long time.

I walked away feeling like it should have been books instead. The movie seems so jumpy from idea to idea with not enough details. A nice fat book might have left me less confused?

This is still bugging the shit out of me two hours later.
Also, how was McGonagall there? The movie takes place on what? 1927, but per the interwebs, she was born in 1935
Not reading the spoilers, but I have read some not so great reviews. Did you like it?
Yes - it is not as good as any of the HP but it’s worth seeing. Honestly if I didn’t want the background lore (there wasn’t much) I wouldn’t have rushed to see it.
I’ve seen it twice, so obviously I thought it was good, lol. The first time was reconnaissance so we could go as a family with my 7 year old, and a friend wanted to go opening night ( I got a niffler pin;) I loved the casting. I adored all the art nouveau touches. I’m curious as hell about Nagini.
McGonagall pissed me off. It was gratuitous and she is listed as Minerva McGonagall in the credits- so no distant family member possibility.
Queenie was a brilliant acquisition. She is valuable, and of course she would get tied into it. She’s a natural leglimens, and she clearly isn’t a witch that likes to play by the rules. We know that Grindenwald is skilled at Occlumency, so her being duped makes sense to me.
On first blush, I thought this was a Rey from Star Wars disappointing story arc and that Credence really had no special lineage. The Aurelius Dumbledore reveal was just an example of Grindenwald’s silver toungue that the guards warned us of in the opening scene.
After rewatching, I think that Ariana’s Obscurus is actually manifest into Credence. In the London Streetcar, Dumbledore says this:
“I know this: an Obscurus grows in the absence of love as a dark twin, an only friend. If Credence has a real brother or sister out there who can take its place, he might yet be saved.”
So, if an Obscurial can create an obscurus, why can’t an obcurus create an Obscurial. I think Credence is Ariana’s dark twin, and as such he is Dumbledore’s flesh and blood.

I saw it last night. I really enjoyed the first movie because I was so tired of the character of Harry Potter. I know he's a teen but I was so ready to be done with teenaged angst that I loved seeing the wizarding world from adult POVs. So I do like that about this movie.
However, as a stand alone movie it was very "huh?" I am trying not to judge it because I think it is setting up for future movies and I am sure many of the things I am questioning will be resolved. But there were so many characters that didn't need to be in the film. The bounty hunter, Yusuf, Bunty, Nicholas Flamel, etc didn't add anything to the storyline. I'm more invested in Tina, Newt, Queenie, and Dumbledore, and the whole Lestrange family soap opera took up SO much of the movie and without context or knowing how it will fit into the future plot it seemed very unnecessary.
There was definitely a lot I liked, though, too. The cat toy! I loved Jude Law as Dumbledore. I loved the addition of Theseus and the whole older brother trying to get the younger a job interview but he immediately blows it scene. I loved that Queenie turned- it reminds me of that woman whose husband was in the US illegally but still voted for Trump because she thought Trump's policies wouldn't apply to him, then he got deported.
I do think Grindlewald is lying to Credence. Maybe I missed it but how is he the only one who knows who Credence is?
ETA: Why are there all these weird links showing up in my post? grrrr.
I saw it yesterday and I have the following thoughts: -I liked it, but I agree it was really weirdly choppy/edited. -I can't stand Johnny Depp - he skeeves me as a person, and I feel like as an actor he has played his characters the same way for the better part of 10 years, so I don't really feel like he brought anything to the role. -I unexpectedly loved Jude Law as young Dumbledore. -The Lestrange family line is so confusing to me now that Leta is dead. -Eddie Redmayne is endearing perfection as Newt. -I got choked up when Hogwarts appeared, because I am lame. lol -I don't buy that Credence is a Dumbledore - like they foreshadowed heavily, Grindelwald will tell him anything to get and keep him on his side. I did not read the theory about him being Arianna's obscurus prior to lissaholly's post, but I love it. -I, too, wish these were books.
Maybe Leta has a secret sibling as well? LOL. Or her brother didn't actually drown?
The McGonagall thing pissed me off too.
Love Jude as Albus, but it also felt a bit wrong to think about Dumbledore being all hot, ha!
I was also trying to figure out a way that Queenie could be a relative of Snape, but I don't think it lines up.
I can't believe there are going to be 5 of these movies!
What was that other Harry Potter related preview before the movie? I missed most of it and DH was no help explaining what they had just shown when I came back from the bathroom.
I mean, maybe they don't care about math or anything, but...like, I just don't think Credence can be a Dumbledore.
1 - Percival Dumbledore was in Azkaban, so if Credence is Kendra's son, hes still not really a Dumbledore, no? 2 - Kendra died in 1899, so are we to believe that Credence is 28?
I have to believe that JK knows what she is doing, and it will all be reveled to make sense. I mean, I remember reading the end of Half Blood Prince and sitting there trying to figure all that out. so. gotta have faith. But it is so hard to do when they do shit like have Dumbledore teaching DADA...NO! He was the Transfiguration teacher?! And why was McGonagall there. I need answers JK.
I felt like the final "Paris is going to be destroyed" scene was completely unnecessary and was only thrown in to have a final "battle". I do like that Grindelwald isn't just a bad guy who wants to kill everyone...because that isn't really how bad guys are - Queenie going over kind of highlights how even good people can sometimes get suckered into the lies from powerful people.
While he did nothing for the story, Nicholas Flamel tickled me. I loved his little slow run for some reason. And the cat toy.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie, and it set up some really interesting plot threads - like, I love that there is finally a reason as to why Dumbledore couldn't face Grindelwald until he did. And while I am no fan of Depp, he wasn't AS BAD as I thought he would be. Colin Farrell would have been better #bringbackgraves
I’m reviving this because I got to see it yesterday and I want to talk about it. I enjoyed the movie, but I agree the editing is weird and it doesn’t really work as a stand alone movie. Rowling writes for the long game, so it seems more like an act 2 of a 5-act play than a play all by itself. She moved the story along.
I really felt they underutilized Tina. How were none of them wondering where Queenie was when the three of them got together? Like, no one said, “hey, why isn’t she with you?”
Rowling seems to love doing the “this person is really that person” big reveal, especially early on in her stories. First book—back of Quirrel’s head is really Voldemort Second—Tom Riddle is Voldemort Third—Scabbers is Peter Pettigrew Fourth—Moody is Barty Crouch
And now she’s done it twice in this series. I think it’s just a thing for her.
I was highly annoyed with much of this movie. Queenie was so blah with her baby talk the whole movie, but maybe she'll get more interesting and commanding if she's really on Grindelwald's side. Tina was highly underutilized. I liked getting more of Leta's story, though. The plot was muddy and convoluted.
HOWEVER, I absolutely LOVE Jude Law as Dumbledore (man, he's hot with that beard), and I adore Newt. And of course I love seeing all of his creatures.

Has anyone followed the outcry over having an Asian actress as Nagini?
And there’s no actual hint of Dumbledore as a gay man in the film, is there? I saw a lot of doubt that it would be included before the film was released, and I’m wondering if it actually showed up or not.

I think it’s made clear enough that he and Grindelwald had an incredibly close relationship. It’s more normalized, rather than the movie feeling the need to spell if out and say, “hey, did you notice? Not just friends?”
One thing that’s annoying me is how everyone seems to know they had a relationship. In the seventh book, wasn’t that supposed to be a huge shock that people doubted?
Rowling was so dedicated to details in the Harry Potter series, and it seems like this book is chucking a lot out of out the window.

It was more that Harry Et Al were surprised it’s hinted that the adults knew.

I had heard that jude law made a comment that they weren't really playing Dumbledore as gay.
But I don't think that is the case at all. Dumbledore acknowledges that he and gellert were "closer than brothers" and there is a pretty impactful scene with the mirror of erised that made Dumbledore's feelings look pretty clear. Now, he wasn't shouting about his long lost love or anything, so maybe that's what they meant?

The ending the Lestrange line with Leeta thing- that’s discounting that she could have cousins via a brother of her father. She might have been the last Lestrange from her father but many of JK’s Wizarding families have be large and featured cousins prominently. Tom Riddle is 1-2 when this movie takes place and in Half Blood Prince in Slughorn’s memory we see that Lestrange as being a couple of years older than Riddle so Bellatrix’s future husband would be somewhere in the 3-7ish range during this movie leading me to believe he must be a cousin.
I don’t believe that Credence is a Dumbledore. It just doesn’t add up to me. But if he is, I think he’s probably the child of one of Albus’s known siblings. Google says Albus was born in 1840 but regardless, I think Albus is too old to make Credence a plausible sibling at 20ish. It seems most reasonable to believe he is Aberforth’s son since we know so little of Aberforth’s background. But really I think Grindlewald is lying.
I really wish they had cast Grindelwald as more dashing and charming. I feel like that would have made his character make more sense. His whole motto was “for the greater good” which I feel like would have been an easier sale to people if he was actually appealing. Between casting Depp for the role and giving him all those visual quirks he just seems kind of disjointed. I felt like a charming person won over Queenie with false logic and sort of a cult of personality yet Depp as Grindlewald was just not someone I could see anyone wanting to hang out with. Idk if I am explaining myself well here.
