Did anyone watch? Freaky that it is based on a true story. For some reason I am thinking a poster on here knows the people it's based on in real life? That must be so weird to see a TV series about people you know.
I can see how she'd be swept up - kind of. But, lord, he only wears rags or scrubs. And that first date night when he walks out and slams the door? Creepy as hell. Easy to quarterback from the sofa though. I can't wait to see the next epi.

Her oldest daughter is a brat! Damn
But yeah, his reaction to her not sleeping with him in the beginning was a huge red flag. Then his phone call and her not defending herself about why she made him leave. Whoa. 😲

I keep thinking that if she'd just chill out and stop being bratty and TALK to her mom, maybe she'd get through and get her mom to see him the way she does!

The premiere episode was randomly posted on YouTube a few weeks ago so I watched it early, and I really feel like there are some fucked up family dynamics. This is in no way intended to victim-blame - what John did was egregious and predatory, but I sincerely hope Deborah is in counseling because she was so afraid of being alone (5 previous marriages???) that she was sneaking around with this dude and making choices that a mentally healthy person wouldn’t make. It makes me wonder if she has some impulse control problems or something. I mean, after EVERYTHING the family ends up going through there’s got to be a lot of PTSD and just a lot of shit to unpack but things were a hot mess before he came along. Connie Britton is doing a great job in the role. Eric Bana is tough for me because I can’t tell if he isn’t connecting to the role or if he is very connected to it but John himself is so secretive and pathological that I don’t see the charisma that supposedly drew her in. I’m curious to see how that unfolds.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

agnes, I'm sorry this is so weird. I don't know how it couldn't be. I was hoping the family had some say in what was portrayed but worried they probably didn't.
My uncle was murdered several years ago. Several shows were made about him, none of which were even close to accurate, because only the defense side was presented. (Our family declined to participate out of respect to my grandparents/his parents.) It is really sickening to try to watch helplessly when you can’t tell the world it’s not accurate. I feel for your family agnes.

I want to watch this but feel iggy knowing it's based on a true story. I'm facinated with the Amanda Knox case and Meredith's family says the same thing, that there are wrong details and you forget about the victim of a violent crime. Let them rest in peace. I'm sorry this is hard for you and your family agnes.

Watched the first episode. I'm sorry egeiger for your loss, and for any of you that have to relive these things through shows or podcasts.
I"m not familiar with the case so I'm curious to see how it unfolds. I agree many red flags. I wanted to jump through the tv at the grandmother for not defending her granddaughter. She's supposed to just "apologize" to a guy who threatened her? Ugh. I know they say some of it is fiction. I wish they made the character seem a little less submissive because she has a great job and seemed to have most of her s together, but yes she's getting swept up.
And I think I have a little woman crush on Connie Britton. She's aged well and they costumer really knows her style, or at least what looks good on her.

I’m totally bummed that I missed some of the posts in here. I loved the podcast.
I can’t imagine how Debras two daughters feel about the way they’re being portrayed. It’s not very flattering. Connie Britton looks great.
Yeah, I did not listen to the podcast (though was familiar with the case) and the girls are not shown well at all. I wonder if it was creative license to make it even more believable that the mom would ignore the concerns of her children. If that makes sense.
So, I’m listening to the podcast. I’m guessing that the parts on the show of him actually working are not accurate. He doesn’t seem to have worked at all.

I think those are flashbacks. I was confused about that so I googled and apparently he was a nurse anesthetist & the first time he went to prison was because he was stealing narcotics from the hospitals he worked at.

I haven't listened to the podcast, but the Dirty John series in the Los Angeles Times covered it in depth.

Really no need to keep this thread going, but apparently I will. I liked the second episode. I re-watched it with DH and now I have a lot of questions. Listening to the podcast now I think my prediction is wrong. Trying not to google to far so I don't spoil anything.
Episode 3 was on last night. I really am liking this series. Eric Bana plays a good creepy guy.
Yes! sometimes it's like can he be this cold/sociopath in real life?
Then I worry about DH because he's immediately thinking ahead like yeah John must have planted the intruder to have a reason for security cameras etc. I'm like are you that creepy too?
