I usually don’t like many scripted shows, but this one is good. I also listened to the podcast. I’m guessing they will at least make the daughter Tara much more likeable.
I agree with PP’s, I am missing the part where he is dreamy and sweeps her off her feet. It’s like two normal dates and they are married.
Eric Bana is probably good at playing an emotionless sociopath because he’s not a very good actor.
ETA: Not implying that Eric Bana is, himself, an emotionless sociopath, just that I don’t think he’s good at portraying emotion.
SHUT IT.
I love me some Eric Bana! He's one of my all-time FAVES.
I actually think he's nailing this role. I'm not attracted to him in this series AT ALL like I usually am. His creep factor is well played by him, IMO.

I think I’m biased because The Time Traveler’s Wife is one of my favorite books and he was pretty horrible in that role
Is anyone still watching? I loved Sunday night's episode. I'm sure that they took creative license on a lot of stuff, but I was glad that they dove in to more of his background so that you could truly see just what a piece of human garbage he was. I literally spent most of the episode with knot in my chest, watching it was making me crazy anxious. He was a scary dude.

I am! And yes, I feel like this episode took a lot of creative license because they really have little idea of the intricacies of what he did/when/how.
I've been watching and felt the same way. I wonder how far off base they really were though. He was so scary and manipulating. But I do feel like they are now rushing things - isn't this week the last episode? They really haven't shown Tara but once or twice, so I feel like it'll be a huge rush at the end.
But it's been good. I've enjoyed it. Even DH has been half-ass watching with me.
I loved how we got to re-see some of the story, but now through his eyes. Definitely added to the level of creepiness! They are doing a really good job with this series, I know they are not sticking to the exact story, but I am enjoying the performances. Connie B is awesome! I do not think anyone else could pull this role off and still be likable, I think I would ordinarily be screaming at the character for being a dumbass, but somehow I am left being sympathetic.

I would suggest listening to the Dirty John podcast. They interviewed his ex-wife who was also a nurse. It is very detailed and I like the perspective of all the different people who've met him in IRL.

The real Debra Newell was on WWHL last night and was asked what isn’t portrayed. Her first answer was the romance. After all that has happened that answer made me shake my head.

I just think that is her still trying to convince people why she was sucked in, how this could have happened.
And, I hate to say this, but someone who has been married that many times... I think there is something about them that they are not working on or aware of when it comes to these relationships. maybe they love the falling in love part but don't do well when things get real. i don't know. (and i am not just talking about her, but in general)

Bingo!
I was browsing through a People magazine yesterday at the salon and one of their December issues was about Deborah and John. And b/c I haven't listened to the podcast, I didn't know how things ended. THANKS People.
I once dated a total con artist and their behaviors are similar and creepy. Fortunately, I dumped his sorry ass but not before he had stolen from me. Lesson learned. Thank god I was only 20 at the time.
I think they've done a good job on laying out the story. Another network is going to be airing a series (I think it's a a series) about the IRL people involved in this story.

While I'm behind I'm loving the show. I agree you really almost hold your breath during certain parts. I need to really listen to the podcast, just no time to listen with focus. Did they explain how he ended up in Ohio if he was CA based?
I'm curious how it ends, are they planning on a season 2 of this show or just wrap it up with how it ended IRL? I heard about the other series, which of course I'll watch lol.

Two things came to mind with the multiple marriages and the seemingly being blind to some of the red flags early on:
1- she kind of strikes me as a woman who "needs" to have a man in her life to feel fulfilled. And he came in saying all the right things and giving her the attention she craves.
2- when listening to the podcast and the grandmother talking about her other daughter's murder - between the not believing Cindy that things were bad and then the almost immediate forgiveness of Billy for what he did.... I dont' know how to really explain it, but my feelings/response to what she said tied in to what I said above. I just got this sense that these women see men as #1 and they believe them despite anything/everything else going on. If you're handsome and nice and say the right things.... well, then, o.k. All is well!
I'm not doing a good job explaining it, but I just remember thinking "WTF?" when I listened to her interview in the podcast.
There's also a large religious aspect too - the concept of forgiveness, etc. But I feel like it was deeper than just the idea of forgiving people for their wrongdoings.

ECB, to your second point, I think that's a lot of where the background episode came from. The grandmother going on the effing stand to say she still loves the guy WHO KILLED HER EFFING DAUGHTER?!? If that was true holy shnikes that's scary. I grew up Catholic so I understand the pressures of forgiveness, but I hope thou shall not kill trumps forgiveness. I agree that the way those women were raised has sent the tone for why Debra is so willing to go back to John. I'm just surprised though because she has such a good job and whatever it's like she can make it on her own, at least financially. He seems like a schemer though. When he said (on the show) I won't get in the way of your family, that was specifically to get her to want to give up her family for him, and make her family feel bad for not supporting JOhn.

I am confused by something. The man that killed Debra’s sister, does her mom still invite him to family things? Or is he still in jail? That is Toby’s father, right? I seem to rememeber that he was at a Christmas gathering?
I have never experienced that kind of tragedy nor am I a religious person but I know how I am and I don’t think I could ever forgive someone who killed my child. I know some need to give that forgiveness to move on or attempt to move on but I don’t think I would.

He's not in jail. He was who the grandmother went and spoke to after church one day. I don't recall if he was at the CHristmas gathering. If he was, I don't feel like that was specifically pointed out.

I am probably remembering wrong, Jon asked Debra’s mom about him and what he did (or something) at the Christmas gathering. He then threw it in the son’s face later.

yes, John asked about him but i thought it was “who was that guy at church?”

From the podcast/Bravo airing, he is "still around" and a part of the family's life. On Bravo, John saw Billy Vickers and got the scoop from Grandma two episodes back (in a flashback). I'm not sure how present he was in real life though. And yes, he is Toby's father (though in real life I think he name is Shad- just like Veronica's "real" name is Jacquelyn)

I find it interesting (odd?) that some names were changed and others weren't. The names weren't changed in the podcast, so it's not like the information isn't out there.
