I loved being home alone on Wednesday and baking. Thursday was okay and all my desserts went over really well. DD had a blast with my brother who did science experiments with her and then watched Cars 3 with her curled up in his lap. My sister was her normal self and left when we arrived to go out and then came back in time for dinner and after eating took her after dinner nap. She is 25 this is her normal deal and drives me bonkers but I don't host so I don't say anything. CenturyLink finally fixed my 18 month issue so I no longer have temp service but he was at my house inside my house from 9 to 2 on Friday and the tech was a heavy smoker so he just stunk the whole house up even though he didn't smoke on site. Saturday was dry and we got the outdoor lights up and went for a long 5 mile walk along the river before going out to dinner. Dinner didn't agree with me and I got really sick in TjMaxx and then spent the rest of the night glued to the toilet at home. Sunday DD had her annual first view of White Christmas while I cleaned the spare room so it looks like a room and not a deep pit of everything.
I’m just tired today. My kids don’t go back to school until tomorrow, but I’m back at work today.
It was a good weekend. I’m sad it’s over. I didn’t get to spend a single minute sewing and I haven’t decorated our house yet. But I did decorate a little outside. Now I need DH to call and have an electrician fix our outside plug so I can plug stuff in.
We bought couches yesterday. And now I'm entirely second guessing our decision. Am I going to hate navy blue couches in a few years?
In other news, I have an ongoing case of the hum drums. I'm mostly over te cold that hit me last week (which is probably why I was adamant I wouldn't sign up to cart around someone's sick kid. Because I was in the throws of misery. My answer may have been different the weeks before), but I still feel like I want to curl up in bed and sleep for approximately 3 months. Which doesn't explain why I was up ALL NIGHT questioning the navy couch decision. I wish I were kidding - between coughing and couch thoughts, I got about an hour of sleep.
Also Christmas threw up at our house yesterday and I love it. We have the lights, the tree made of lights out front, the glowing presents, the dripping lights, the light projector (a new addition this year). I thought it would be too much but since our house/yard is so much bigger than the old one, it's really not. We need to figure out how to get lights up on the second story.

k3am, navy couches sounds pretty safe. my only thought is to water-proof them if you haven't already done so and could benefit from that, because kids.
I found out this morning that we spent the weekend with a cousin who now has fifth's disease after a visit to the pedi today. I swear to god, none of us better get that. I don't have a spare second to deal with that right now.
Other than that, the weekend was amazing. Exactly the recharge weekend I needed away with my family. I think we all needed it before the holiday season hits.

This past weekend was pleasantly not too busy. I watched 3 Hallmark movies. However, I am sick of H hiding out in our room away from the kids to watch tv by himself. This weekend I'm convinced he was avoiding helping DD with her homework, which is like pulling teeth. Every day her teacher sends home incomplete classwork and I have no doubt why; she is so easily distracted.
k3am , navy couches sounds pretty safe. my only thought is to water-proof them if you haven't already done so and could benefit from that, because kids.
The have some special technology that should be resistant to any stains or spills, and if it does stain, they'll come out and take care of them for the first 5 years. I only have to wait 4-8 weeks until we actually see the couches... I'm excited and terrified.
The weekend was good. We cut down a christmas tree at a farm just outside of town, and brought it home to decorate. All the Christmas stuff is up, and I'm almost done buying for everyone on the list, which is amazing. I just need to get a few more gift cards. I even convinced DH to just buy something reasonable from Costco for some friends of ours, which he agonizes over each year, which has also resulted in gifts for them not arriving by Christmas in the past.
k3am - do you like the projector? I refuse to put lights on the second story, but I love the look of lights!
I didn't want to the projector, but DD really wanted it and has DH wrapped around her finger.. we got a cheap one from Home Depot for like $13? It's pretty cool, but I wish he'd spent a little more money and got the ones at Costco since they're solar powered so there's no extension cord and I think it has more options for the display.

Kids had a snow day today, so I stayed home with them until mid-afternoon, then DH came home so I could go into a meeting.
DH and I did an impromptu clean-out of our two storage areas. While it was a bunch of unplanned work, we now have two nice, organized storage spaces and some junk cleaned out.

k3am, I think navy blue couches sound amazing! I may actually consider those for my house now that you mentioned them. I’ve been thinking gray or something lighter/neutral but navy would go with all of my in-my-head decorating ideas.
I took Tuesday and Wednesday off last week which was spent with my parents and driving down to Southern IL to visit my in laws. We had Thanksgiving at my husband’s stepsister’s house which was so good. I haven’t stuffed myself like that in years and I felt awful but it was worth it.
Friday was T-day at my MILs and Saturday was 61 degrees! So we spent some time outside. The whole time I was watching the weather in Chicago bc of the snowstorm they predicted. It kept changing - at first the snow wasn’t coming until Sun evening, then they changed it to the morning so I made the last minute decision to head home Saturday night. The kids and I got home around 11:30 pm. DH had gone down there early to go hunting so he had his truck and came home on Sunday after a mass in honor of his Dad who passed away in March. He got home around 5 but said traffic was awful.
Sunday was spent cleaning up, doing laundry and grocery shopping. I feel bad that I missed FILs mass but I’m grateful I had the extra time.
School was cancelled last night and I woke up to about 6” of snow that took about two hours for DH and I to shovel and we even used a snowblower for part of that! It’s very wet and heavy snow and has taken down trees and power lines so traffic was horrible this morning. So glad I WFH on days like these.

Today is my last day off before going back to work. I ran errands this morning and am working on Shutterfly calendars for the grandparents. They've come to expect them now.
It was a decent weekend. We didn't do much. Thanksgiving went well. Saturday, I took DS to the farmers market and let him do his own shopping and pay for things. It was so cute how adamant he was about certain things, like we had to get a purple cabbage for Caesar salad.
We had a ball baking Wednesday. Then dd had volleyball and it all went down from there. She did great, but got into the car and burst into tears. She said they all didn't like her and one girl gave her a mean look. They didn't have time not to like her and that one girl just has a mean look. The first say of high school is going to be fun.
Thanksgiving was great, but I ate way too much.
Saturday was the girls shopping trip. I am done except for gift cards. How 15 crackling, liquored up women didn't get kicked out that hotel, is a miracle.
k3am, my favorite color is blue, and I love navy with white. I bet they look nice.
DH was home all week last week, and got stuff around the house done as well as cooking for Thanksgiving. We had a pretty good meal, and I think I was doing dishes when a little drama went down, so I missed it.
Friday my MIL made me go to Kohls, but it was good though because we skipped the line and bought stuff at the jewelry counter. DH and his sister went to lunch and apparently had a pretty intense discussion where of course his sister had to bring up their childhood. So I am glad I missed that because I have heard all of his angst before, and have no interest in their personal history of issues. We went out to dinner with my SIL's in-laws. In-laws of the in-laws is always interesting...
Everyone went home, but my mom on Saturday, so we had a girls day and went to the movies. Sunday was a get organized and rest day. I went to doctor for my eczema, and went out to Once Upon a Child. My mom always helps me clean the kitchen; it was sparkling. Too bad I can't seem to keep it that way myself.
This year they implemented an E learning policy. All kids k-12 got a device and we have scheduled e learning days (so essentially work from home days). All work on e learning days is due in 48 hours. That obviously brings about a lot of headache for working parents. Arranging childcare, staying home, etc. But the proposed benefit was that in the event of a snow day, they kids can just log into their devices and do their work and there won't be a snow day tacked onto the end of the school year (or the loss of a scheduled day off). Ok, lots of parents were not pleased overall, but we got through it. We have done 3 of the scheduled E learning days. It goes over pretty smoothly.
Now, today is the first snow day. No problem, right? Kids can just log in and do all their work. Nope. Apparently, because a tiny portion of the district had a power outage, they didn't make today an e learning day. Well, then what the heck is the point? I get its not "fair" to those without power, but wouldn't you assume that any time school is cancelled due to weather that a certain percentage of the district will be without power? Also, they have 48 hours to complete the work. That is plenty of time. So now, we will have a day tacked on to the end of the year, but guess what, now it's an e learning day. So some parents had to take a day off today bc of the weather to be home with their kids and will now have to take ANOTHER day off for the make up e learning day. It makes no sense to me!
madringal that is awful!! I’d get parents organized and hit a school board meeting ASAP before they lock down the 19-20 calendar.
DH was great over vaca - we had four days off together with the kids. Kids and I spent 5 hours decorating my mom’s door for the contest at her place. Madness. My kids are crazy competitive.
I’m nervous about DH’s Christmas party in Chicago. It’s at the museum in mid December. I may die of cold. We have the local holiday party the weekend before. He’s pushing me to purchase a new winter coat as he hates the gorgeous lined trench I got as a college grad gift and the dry cleaner ruined the leather trim on my other one. He said I have to look “extra presentable” and now he’s made me nervous as I haven’t met these people before and they are all C suite. That’s his crowd, not mine.
So if anyone has good coat suggestions for formal AND coaching soccer games hit me up, please.
2chatter an excuse to shop for a new coat! How fun! Price range? I'm usually willing to spend a little more on coats since I buy them so infrequently (I bought two last year after realizing the two I'd had were bought in 2005 and 2007.)
F today. DH wrestled the new dishwasher in after our old one crapped out last night. Took 2 huge chunks out of the awful Formica counter.
Picked up the kids and DD1 announced that DD2 fell off the 6 ft play structure and school. DD2 then said she couldn’t move her wrist. She’s still at the ER, but it’s broken. No call from the school??
Aaaand we got audited and supposedly owe like $2k from 2015. We don’t, but what a pain in the @$$this is going to be.
mae0111- Wait. So DD2 hung out at school all day with a broken wrist?? Like they didn’t know she was hurt? Or they transported her to the ER and didn’t call you? Either one is so not okay. The only way this could be okay is if she didn’t tell any adult her arm hurt. Which I have a hard time believing.
2chatter- Women in Chicago wear sensible coats that keep them warm so they don’t die. Because it is flipping COLD there in the winter. I would buy a long wool coat because they are awesome. Or a long puffy coat because they are warm. But I have a long puffy coat and only wear it when I have to go really cold places like Illinois and Montana in winter for work. It’s never cold enough here for the puffy coat. My long wool coat, I wear everywhere. Same with my car length wool coat with a hood.
mommyatty - DD2 has a ridiculous pain threshold. What likely happened is that she fell, she cried, and she told the nurse that she fell. Nurse probably didn’t know the extent of the fall, and DD2 would not have offered it up. I’m a little concerned that no teacher saw it, but I also know that there are only 2 adults for the whole school yard. They don’t know her well enough (yet) to know that any kind of crying means a decent injury.
DD1 saw her crying and asked her what happened and all she said was “I fell down.” Her friend filled DD1 in, and DD1 told me - DD2 just told me she fell, too. No details.
My 10-year-old nephew had the same type of fracture several weeks ago (buckle fracture). He didn’t tell his mom until 10 hours after it happened - as she was in bed at like 11pm he wandered in and said, “Mom, by the way, I fell today and my wrist kind of hurts.”
I found lice on DD on Saturday morning. Of course we hosted thanksgiving and she played a lot with four other little girls. So we spent Saturday having a lice pro come to our house and check/treat not only our family, but two other families as well. Only DD had it, plus one bug on me. Plus I had to do all the laundry and vacuuming and everything. It was a long and expensive day!
If any of the rest of you spend money treating lice - FYI you can submit it to your FSA.
I have been cranking on putting two big proposals together for work that are due by noon tomorrow. I’ve enjoyed being busy and the type of work it is, but it also didn’t feel like much of a holiday weekend. As soon as I upload them, I’ll be back to a super light/nothing to do kind of work day. I’m not looking forward to going from all-in to nothing. DH is out of town this week, so I’m doing pickups, etc and leaving work early, so even with the extra work this weekend, I can’t really just take a day, it’s instead split into all the pickups.
We had a nice extended holiday weekend. On Thursday, we went to my parents' and ate way too much good food. The kids enjoyed playing with their cousins. On Friday, we went to the science center and had a blast. Saturday was Thanksgiving with the in-laws. FIL hosted at his house since he has made major progress with cleaning since MIL died. SIL and her kids came in from OH which was nice. SIL from NC didn't come in because I don't know why. This is the first holiday without MIL and FIL really wanted everyone to be together. She didn't call or anything and we didn't think to call her either. It's probably for the best since SIL told us she is getting divorced. She does this every couple of weeks - sends a group text saying her marriage sucks. DH told her it's time to get a divorce. SIL said she is serious this time and that her H is getting a lawyer this week. I don't think she realizes that she also needs to get a lawyer and it will cost $$$.
On Sunday, we decorated for Xmas. The house looks great and I even did some online shopping. The kids are 75% done but we still need to shop for extended family. I figure that a weekend shopping with my mom should do the trick.

2chatter, because you also want a coat you can wear for coaching, I would suggest a thinner puffy coat that is knee-length. I would suggest checking out Columbia, Patagonia, or The North Face. Columbia, for example, has a heat reflective liner (Omni Heat) in many of its coats, so check for something like that. And I agree with mommyatty that most Midwest women are more concerned with a sensible coat that will keep them warm than something fancy that isn't warm enough. (I've lived in MI my whole life.) Plus, I'm assuming there will be coat check, so it's not like people will see your coat all night long.
