I'm taking DD to a local kiddie salon on Friday for her first haircut. She's 1.5.
DD's hair is fine and she doesn't have a ton of it, but the front is falling over her eyes and the back is looking scraggly. She won't keep a bow, headband or elastic/whale spout in her hair, so we're probably past due for a trim to tidy her up.
Any tips or tricks to keep her happy? Yelp says the salon has fun-shaped chairs and video screens.
How old was your LO when they got their first pro haircut? How long did it take?
DS was about 11 months and it took about 4 minutes (to be fair, we bring him to a place called "Fast Phil's" lol). He was uncharacteristically chill the first time, but its hit or miss now. We let him watch videos on my phone when he's not feeling it.
The first time was the easiest. We went to a kid place and they just knew what to do. It's pricey so now we take him to my H's barber and that's a little more of a struggle. We bribe him with Elmo.
DD was 16 months when we first took her. I took her to my regular stylist so it wasn't a specific kid friendly place. She wasn't happy at all but I held her and it only took a few minutes. She's been back once or twice since then and still doesn't sit still, but at least now she keeps a hair tie in (she didn't for a long while) so we'll be able to space it out much more.
Ugh I am dreading this. Now both of the girls are resisting putting their hair back. I really don’t want to deal with bangs and they will haaaaaaate getting it cut. Report back with what works for you, please lol.

My kids both sat on my lap for the first few haircuts (my 3.5 year old still does). I brought books to look at and back up of playing with my phone. It worked well and the haircut was done before they had much time to get upset.

My daughter has similar hair and it was over in less than 5 minutes but we didn’t have bangs cut (can’t tell if you’re doing bangs or not). We just talked it up and said a nice lady would do it and it wouldn’t hurt and she was fine. She usually cries at any new experience so that was a surprise to us.

We went though this phase and we just let it ride. She got used to moving her hair out of her face when needed.
We still haven’t cut BB’s hair. She want “long hair” but I make sure it’s in a pony tail for daycare but I let her wear it loose on the weekend. She’s gotten used to that rule.
DS was almost 18 months at his first hair cut. I'd say his first 3-4 haircuts involved a lot of tears, but they've gotten better and better. He watches a show on my phone and knows he gets a lollipop at the end. His first cut was at one of those kid places, but they gave him the classic bowl cut, so I found a local barber on yelp that got good reviews for working with young kids.

We went at 8 months (L had a TON of hair) and it was easy. We didn't go to a special kids' salon, but to my lady, who is great with kids. She played with a hair clip the whole time, and it took maybe ten minutes? She sat on my lap.
We actually just got DS's first haircut today at 10.5 months. He's been going with me for my haircuts since he was tiny, so he knows my hairdresser well. He grinned at her when we got there and he did fine with the clippers, though I think they tickled him because he moved a bit but didn't whine or cry. He sat on my lap and we both wore our own cape.
My son was 12 months. I thought he’d freak out, but he did fine sitting on my lap. It takes like 5 minutes for his cut.
My DD was 2.5 years or so. We just rode out the scraggly stage because my H was adamant that she not cut her hair for whatever reason. We started the day with a clip/elastic and then just let her deal with hair in her eyes when she kept pulling them out. DD would let some of her daycare teachers French braid her hair often. Of course, she sat perfectly still for them.
My son got his first haircut at 10 months. He had a mullet that needed to go. We went to a kiddie place and he did really good! We bribed him with animal crackers though.
He did well with his first couple haircuts, but from about 15 months to about 2 years, they were a struggle.

DD is 3.5 and still hasn't had a haircut. It's pretty curly, and I'm afraid the curls will be gone if we cut it. When her bangs were growing out, we just clipped them off to the side, and she was pretty good about leaving the clip in. Now I put a braid in that piece to keep even more of it out of her face.
DS was 21 months I believe. I'd trimmed his bangs a few times before that first real haircut. We took him to great clips (a chain). He sat on H's lap and did ok. We've taken him back every few months since then and the ladies all know him now. It's definitely not his favorite activity, but he does slightly better each time.
In case anyone's kid doesn't tolerate haircut appointments well, I have a friend who cuts her son's hair at home using these scissors and it looks great! Admittedly it is easiest if you start early on a baby or right after a pro haircut just to maintain the shape: calmingclipper.com/
our's was a little different experience because a great friend is a hairdresser, so she came to our house. We put S in his high chair and fed him dinner while she gave him a little trim. Took about 3 minutes.
