NYT article citing Phoenix police. Per the police, they have a lot more violent people that pull out guns and knives. Per reports and research, no they don't; they are on par with any other city their size. But Phoenix police have a far higher rate of use of force. So many stories in this article that I couldn't just pick one to quote (and apparently the article isn't letting me anyway.)
But, for example, a blind 44 year old man who, as he was leaving a restroom, accidentally brushed against a police officer using a urinal. He was arrested and charged with assaulting an officer.
In Phoenix there have been 44 shootings so far this year, 11 more than the combined total of Philadelphia, San Antonio and San Diego - COMBINED.
City Manager: "I don't think there's a sense that there's something wrong in the department. The issue is 'What's going on in our community in total that assaults on police officers are up, use of weapons against police officers is up, and that police officer-involved shootings are up?" The evidence that cites these stats? The police reports.
There are definitely problems from the top down. (Not just in Phoenix. They're no outlier.)

If they are beating Kiladelphia than that is pretty high. They clearly need a lot of retraining and hope they have access to that training. What I never understood is why police are so pro second Amendment. You were think they would be much safer with less guns and less access to guns. I don't get it.
Every time Trump addresses a police group I feel sick. His fear mongering gets more people killed. And yes, training should prevent these shootings in escalated situations along with gun law reforms. Why the fuck isn’t that a priority. NVM.

Asked why there were so many more police shootings than in other large cities, Mr. Crane said Phoenix has “a lot more people that want to pull guns and knives on the cops.”
Translation, we are the most hostile border state, and we buy into trumps “ bad guys” narrative.

Also, those stats are so wrong. Philly has 325 homicides vs. Phoenix at 69 per the UCR report as of today. So a total of 69 homicides, 44 shootings by police and can probably assume half of those homicides are from police as they aim to kill. Fuck that city manager and the head of police. They are creating and escalating this situation. I am very proud of the work we have done in designing and implementing new police trainings and responses to the mentally ill; that along with a 24 hour mobile crisis unit, it has been wildly successful with a shitton of stats to back it but without the help of the counties or police chiefs nothing will change. I assume once all the million dollar lawsuits start getting paid out the city manager may have a different stand. Fuck them.
