Thanks everyone - I can't believe how many people have similar stories. You'd think that payroll would be the one thing you would be sure not to screw up in a company.
I seriously haven't really ever cried at work and yesterday, just couldn't keep it in, so I know several of my coworkers are looking at me oddly today, and have asked, "How are things, really?" Ugh. I had my office door closed and a coworker just popped in to ask me a question and was super surprised. I keep telling myself that I'm lucky that DH has a good salary just got a bonus, so we can cut back and still not feel total loss. Plus I also realized I didn't notice b/c the first messed up paycheck coincided with summer vacation for the kids and the last of our daycare payments.
I send a message to a friend of a my sister's who is a tax attorney to see if there is anything else to consider. I also talked to the Labor board in our state and the company's state and the only law is that the company is entitled to their money back, nothing on terms or fault, but they did give me good advice on making sure that I was comfortable and not to worry about timelines that the company would like. My company gave me three options to pay back slowly from 6 months to 12 months (I'm okay with that timing since I am also dropping retirement from 18% to 10%, so my take-home will only decrease by about $300 per check or $600/month). I'm not planning to leave the company, so 12 months should be fine. I also might talk to my supervisor about going back full-time for awhile to see if that could be an option, but unluckily that also comes with more cost for aftercare for 2 of the kids.
