For TG I would look into early morning flights out on that day. You will have the time zone difference working in your favor. I bet you can get to MKE by noon.
That's harder on Christmas because I like Christmas Eve, but possible not horrible. At Christmas, would your H's travel dates be more flexible? If your housemates are all traveling, you might have the place to yourselves.

Yeah, I have looked for flights on Thanksgiving Day, but so far, everything that week is super expensive. Since Midway is kinda sorta on the way from MKE to my ILs' house, I've looked into that, but it's the same story.
For Christmas, I definitely want to be here for Christmas Eve. Plus, Christmas Eve is a Monday this year, so if I'm going to spend the money on a plane ticket, it makes way more sense to use PTO for Christmas Eve and spend the weekend here. I'd rather fly home on the evening of Christmas Day if I had to. Christmas is non-negotiable to me because of plans we already had to have our parents come up.
I'm just hoping that I can at least score a cheapo ticket for President's Day weekend.
you guys have no idea how lucky you are. in canada, the flight prices to fly anywhere are off the chain. even if you do find a flight for $300-$400, you still have to pay almost $300 in taxes on top of that. so stop your bitching.
Ha! You and I are the only ones who disagree. It's not a coincidence we are both Canadian.
Don't know your dates, but Kayak is showing direct flights for around then for $250.
I just found the motherload on Delta's site (not sure why they weren't showing up other places?!)
DH is calling his dad tonight to figure out details so we can book. These are much cheaper than previous years!
I'm glad this thread happened or I wouldn't have even looked!
Take your best guess about flight times and book tickets NOW. If after your DH talks to his dad they decide on other times, you can cancel and get a full refund on Delta for 24 hours (even on nonrefundable tickets). But I have been burned too many times by just waiting a few hours to check with family/DH/whoever and going back and the awesome deal was gone.
Also, haven't airline prices come down in the past 20 years? I thought I read that even accounting for inflation, prices are down.
This is actually true. If you look at airline prices from way back when...I'm talking 50-60's...it would cost you the same then to fly across the country, around 400-500, as it does now...and as we know, money isn't worth the same, so it's actually pretty crazy.

To a certain degree, some prices just *seem* higher. Now airlines are required to include taxes and fees in the price you see when looking up flight prices. It easily adds almost $100 to the price, depending on how many airports you're stopping at.

I convinced my family to have an alternative Christmas this year because I was not paying $700 to fly back to Michigan. It's almost $500 every time I fly back, no matter what time of year. It's an insult!
