It is so much worse for elementary school. Our winter break is 2.5 weeks long. 12 weekdays and 6 weekend days. So 18 days before my kids return to school!
Plus 9 1/2 days off fall semester and 11 1/2 days off in spring semester plus whatever snow days (we already had 1 in November!)
That is 33 days plus snow days over a 9.5 month period
Makes me question whether I will ever be able to go back to work though fortunately DH had 5 weeks of vacation.

DD1 is in a public preschool that is closed on all school holidays. DD2’s is closed from 12/24-1/2 and again for a week at the end of the summer. Plus federal holidays. They are closed on Friday July 5th and the day after Thanksgiving. I’m a teacher so these are NBD. If I weren’t, it’d be hard. Their previous day care was closed for 2 weeks in December/January, which was tough.

The federal holidays plus a week at July 4th and a week at Christmas (this year also closed the 31st). The full weeks are unpaid, Monday/Federal holidays paid.
It seemed like a lot until we got to public school, which seems to be basically never open.

pugz does your school have a before/after program? Most of the schools around here do & they are open all in service/early out days & most breaks. (they close similarly to daycare, just the 8 major federal holidays)

We love our daycare. It's very rare that we have to take a day off because they're closed. So far it's only happened with the hurricanes. They're closed five days out of the next two weeks. They close Thanksgiving (but not the day after), New Year's, Labor Day, Memorial Day, July 4, and I think that's it. When Hurricane Florence hit us, school was out for nine days, but daycare was only closed for four. And those were because they didn't have power and couldn't open. They don't have any full weeks where the close.

we wouldn't need before care since my husband works 1 mile from home and walks my daughter to school on his way, but we would need after care.
I don't know that ours is always open on school breaks. I know parks and rec offers day camps on many days that school is out.

You really just have to find a high school student or local daycare that will take them on vacation days or snow days. Its doable. Annoying but doable.
it looks like the YMCA does offer care for almost all days off school (except the actual holidays) for $30 a day, not bad! They condense all the kids at one location on some of the breaks instead of having them at their regular school like they do most days. Our neighbor also does after school and summer care (she is a para at our school during the day) so I'm hoping she may be an option too. My oldest will probably be able to stay home alone at some point too since our school is only a 2 minute walk.

11 days
Jan 1/ New year’s Jan 21 / MLK April 19/Good Friday April 22/Easter Monday May 27/Memorial Day July 4/Independence Day September 2/Labor Day November 28 & 29 Thanksgiving Holidays December 24 & 25 Christmas Holidays
Typically it's eight: New Year's Day Either MLK or President's Day (for teacher training) Memorial Day 4th of July Labor Day Thanksgiving and day after Christmas
This year they also added Christmas Eve, probably because of how it falls in relation to the weekend.
In addition to two in-service days per year, we close for Memorial, Indeendence, Labor, Thanksgiving and the day after, and Christmas and New Year. This year we are closed for Christmas Eve and New Years Eve since we would likely have a very small number of kids and 95% of our parents aren’t working those days. We decided this back in August though, and it was included in the student packets that went out to every family with all the major events.
Ours is an in-home daycare with all teacher’s children. She closes ALOT. She takes 2 weeks paid for Christmas break, 3 days paid for Thanksgiving, a week paid for Spring Break, and 2 weeks paid during the summer. She also takes all of the little holidays off paid too (Memorial Day, etc.). I honestly feel like she’s taking advantage of us but daycares are slim pickings around here and she knows it and she’s the best one around here. It’s a wonderful daycare and my kids are happy there so I guess that’s all that really matters.
Let's see. New Year's Day, MLK, President's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, a couple teacher workdays in July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, three days at Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve through New Year's. So...around 19 days for us (depending on what day of the week Christmas falls). I understand that this would be more challenging if I weren't a teacher (the only days he has off that I don't are President's Day and Good Friday because he goes to a Christian school). At the same time, childcare providers are underpaid and I don't begrudge them the days off.
This is Michael's last year in daycare. He's been at three different places, and all of them have been closed between Christmas and New Year's.
5. New year’s, Good Friday, July 4th, Thanksgiving and Christmas. They do ask for attendance around holidays so they can work on reduced staff. They have a ton of doctors’ and nurses’ kids because of this. I would be annoyed if they sprung a closing on me with practically no notice.
